During her childhood years she lived in Onawa, IA; Colorado; Marcus, IA, and in 1949 they moved to Sheldon, IA where she attended the Sheldon School system and worked at Hollanders 5&10 store. Colleen was united in marriage to Eugene John Holtrop on March 8, 1958 in Matlock, IA. They made their home on a farm south of Fulda, MN and had two daughters, Connie and Vonnie. Colleen was a homemaker and helped work on the farm for 22 years. Colleen then moved to Worthington, MN and began working as an assistant manager at a Hallmark store, Leuthold’s Clothing, and then worked as quality control and cleaning for Sather’s Candy Company in Round Lake, MN until her retirement in her early 70’s. From 2013-2016 Colleen was blessed to babysit her great-grand daughter Kinley daily while Lindsey worked. This brought her joy as they read books, played games, painted each other’s fingernails, and baked goodies. They had a very special bond. In 2018 Colleen moved to Hills, MN to be near family. Colleen was raised in the United Methodist Church, and currently is a member of the American Reformed Church in Worthington, MN and enjoyed working in the kitchen and decorating at various church events. She enjoyed roller skating, playing softball and going to movies as a youth. In her later years she had a passion for drawing, painting, and most of all gardening. She had vegetable gardens in which she canned many foods, and she also had very large flower gardens which consisted of fish-filled ponds, which she constructed herself, with walking bridges over the ponds, fountains and waterfalls. Colleen dug-out the words, “God’s Garden” and planted flowers within the wording. She was also a talented seamstress making coats and dresses for her daughters, men’s suits, and wedding gowns for two sisters. She also loved crocheting blankets for her daughters, and baby blankets for all of her great grandchildren. She was proud to share that love and taught Lindsey to crochet. Shopping with her girls, lunch dates, and going to see the “Flower Feller” were also a favorite. But most of all she loved spending time with her family. Her daughters were her world and always made it a point to let her love and gratitude be known. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events and dance recitals. Colleen passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Sanford Ava’s Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD reaching the age of 84 years, 6 months and 16 days. Those left to cherish her memories are her two daughters, Connie (Steve) Wiertzema of Hills, MN and their children, Kale (Hailee) Wiertzema and their children, Kai, Luka and Scout; Karic (Nicole) Wiertzema and their children, Rory and Conley. Vonnie (Loren) Petersen of Sibley, IA and their children, Laura (fiancé, Steve Zwart) and their children, Grayson, Weston and Huxton; Lisa (Brad) Block and their children, Gavin, Beckett, Ashtin and Skyler; Lindsey (Cody) Marco and their children, Kinley, Jackson and Laney; Lacey (Brady) Anderson and their children, Jase, Klayton and Kaprie; her stepmother, Nyla King of Sheldon, IA; four sisters, Elaine (Murph) Ver Meer of Boyden, IA; Sandra (Bill) Hegna of Madrid, IA; Karin (Peter) Vandenberg of Sheldon, IA; and Sheila (Charles) Lienau of Palmyra, NE; a brother-in-law, Dennis Shatto of Nebraska City, NE; a sister-in-law, Marilyn King of Sheldon, IA and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant in childbirth; two infant siblings in childbirth; a brother, Gary “Joe” King; a sister, Debra Shatto; and a great granddaughter, Peyton Block. Colleen had a strong faith in her Lord and Savior which gave her strength to overcome trials. Two of her favorite verses were:
