“On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame.  And I love that old cross where the dearest and best, for a world of lost sinners was slain.  So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down.  I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a CROWN.

Mrs. Frances Manley Shannon entered eternal rest on February 8, 2022 surrounded by her family in Camden, North Carolina.  She was born on January 12, 1924, in Hertford County (Ahoskie, North Carolina) to the late E.P. Manley and the late Almeter Flora Manley and was the wife of the late Rufus Shannon.  She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Shannon and Shirley Boyd (Fred); four brothers, Cecil Manley, Aaron Manley, Johnny Manley, and James Manley; and two sisters, Louvenia Banks and Esther Mae Simmons.

Celebration of Life Services will be Tuesday, February 15, 2022, 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Rev. Dr. Ricky L. Banks, Pastor, Rev. Dr. Wade Staten Sr., Eulogist.  Interment will be in Dove’s Landing Cemetery, Elizabeth City, North Carolina.  A public walk-through viewing will be Monday, February 14, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Masks are still required for all services.

Mrs. Shannon leaves to cherish her memory five children, Howard Shannon (Inez-Tina), Camden, North Carolina, Hazel Bowe, Portsmouth, Virginia, Gloria Davis (Walter), Newport News, Virginia, Orethia Mullen (Barry) and Pamela S. Etheridge (Michael) both of Camden, North Carolina; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; and fifteen great-great grandchildren who will miss their grandmother greatly. Also mourning her loss is a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

The family will receive friends Friday through Sunday (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) at the home of her loving daughter, Orethia Mullen, 277 Country Club Road, Camden, North Carolina.
