We are sad to announce the passing of Rose Katherine Bolduc on February 4th 2022 at Delwynda Court Deloraine at the age of 91.

On August 22, 1930 a baby girl was born to John and Katherine Ruder of Estevan, Saskatchewan.  She was named Rose Katherine and joined her older siblings Marie and Eugene.  Sadly their father died during surgery before Rose’s second birthday.  The family lived a modest life in Estevan with their mother working hard to raise her children.

Rose went to Valley View School and to Estevan Collegiate.  She played the French horn in the school band. Rose made many friends and had great memories of them In fact, condolences have come in from several with whom she was still in touch.   Her ambition was to become a teacher and although she was accepted to Normal School she had to decline and go to work due to finances.  She found a job in the business office of St Joseph’s hospital that she really enjoyed.

Her very first job, while still in school was at Whitby’s Hardware store as a clerk.  It was there that she met Donald, a handsome young man who was spending his winters in Estevan and also worked at Whitby’s.  In the spring he would return to work on the farm with his brothers in Deloraine.  Rose recalled one of Don’s tactics to grab her attention. To check the accuracy of the store scale he would ask Rose to step on it as she was exactly 100 pounds.

In November of 1950 Rose and Donald were married and moved to Deloraine.  After a winter in town, they began life on the farm.  They were blessed with 5 children Gary (1951), Anne (1953), David (1955), Lorne (1957) and Donna Jean (1961).  These were busy years with the children attending Bidford country school.  There were many birthday cakes, swimming trips to Chain Lakes and visits with friends and neighbors that kept the family busy. The road to Estevan was well travelled as it was home for both Don and Rose.

Reading was an important pastime for Rose and she belonged to the Winnipeg Lending Library.  It was always an adventure to walk the quarter mile to the mailbox and see if the books had arrived.  Rose and Don played bridge with neighbours and were active in the Flying Farmers Association.  They belonged to St Antoninus Catholic Church and Rose was a long standing member of the CWL.  Rose loved to shop and could grab her purse at a moment’s notice to go to Brandon or to Bottineau if ‘parts’ were needed for the farm.

Travelling included trips to Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, California and Europe.  The Europe trip marked their 25th anniversary and included stops in England and Belgium to revisit places Don had served in the Air Force during World War ll.  They also made trips to Caroline, Alberta where David had settled and to Williams Lake, BC to see Anne.

In 1990, Don and Rose moved into town.  They had fun participating in the square dancers club.  Rose was always crocheting something and made many an afghan.  They played countless games of crib and other cards. Rose was lucky enough to get a 29 hand in crib in her later years.   She had an amazing ability to ‘whip up’ a fantastic meal at a moment’s notice.  Everyone loved to be seated at her table!   Their home was so welcoming and kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren all loved to be there.

In 2019, when living at home was too difficult for Donald, Rose quickly made the decision to move with him into the Personal Care Home.  She was at his side when he passed away in 2020 just short of their 70th wedding anniversary.  Sadly, Rose’s personal struggle with myasthenia gravis along with pandemic restrictions made life very challenging.

One of Rose’s greatest pleasures was visits from family, in person, over the phone or via FaceTime.  She loved being entertained by the youngest members of the family, Sadie and Zachary.  Her bulletin board was full of pictures and drawings and she loved her family dearly.

Rose was predeceased by her parents Katherine and John, her sister Marie (Walliser) and brother Eugene, her son David in 2014 and husband Donald in 2020.

She is survived by children Gary (Susan), Anne (Greg Brown), Lorne (JoAnne), Donna Jean (Barry Lamb) and daughter-in-law Sherlye.  She has 11 grandchildren: Kevin, Cindy, Scott, Leslie, Aaron, Jacqueline, Kristie Lynn, Danielle, Trina, Mike, Allison and 15 great grandchildren Megan, Caitlyn, Sadie, Olivia, Dawson, Sutter, Sawyer, Landon, Callie, Rose, Jude, Chael, Seth, Paisley and Zachary.  Also surviving Rose are 2 sisters-in-law Wilhelmina Ruder and Elaine Bolduc Laplante along with many nieces and nephews.

The family is so appreciative of the care Rose received from April Reimer and the staff at Delwynda Personal Care Home.  Also from the hospital staff and Doctors Sharma, Nell and Tomayo.  Your compassion and caring ways will long be remembered.
