Sophie McDermott
Belchertown- Sophie M. (Smola) McDermott, 94, of Belchertown passed away at home on January 21, 2016 with her daughter by her side. Born on November 15, 1921 in Belchertown, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Catherine (Swiatek) Smola. She was a life long Belchertown resident, and worked in Administration Dept at the former Belchertown State School for over 38 years before retiring in Dec 1986. She was a communicant of St. Francis Church. Sophie proudly served our country during WWII as a Navy Veteran. She was a member of the Friends of the Belchertown Library, and an avid reader. She had a genuine passion for Line Dancing. Sophie was a loyal Red Sox fan. She found beauty in simple things. She loved to sit and watch for hours the snow fall from behind her large picture window. Sophie was one of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet and everyone who knew her loved her. Sophie will be deeply missed by her children, Melody McDermott of Belchertown, with whom she lived, and Mark McDermott of Charlotte, NC.; a sister Amelia Miller of San Diego, CA.; and 32 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John McDermott of Belchertown and 11 brothers and sisters; Stephanie Guimond, Mary Mathras, Joseph Smola, John Smola, Walter Smola, Julia Anderson, Gladys Shelton, Veronica Dana, Fran Ball, Victor Smola and Rudolph Smola. Private burial took place on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 10:00 at South Cemetery in Belchertown. The Beers and Story Belchertown Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements.
