James “Jim” Robert Bartlett, 69, of Atchison, KS, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the Lansing Care and Rehabilitation Center, Lansing, KS, surrounded by his family.

Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, Saturday, February 5, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Memorials are suggested to Lansing Care and Rehabilitation Center for a hospice room or the Atchison VFW Post# 1175 and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Jim was born on April 3, 1952, in Atchison, KS, the son of Robert and Laura “Peg” (Roe) Bartlett. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1970 and enlisted in the Navy, where he proudly served his country on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University in Physical Education. Upon graduation he worked for Ryder Truck Rental and Motorola in Omaha, Nebraska until he returned to Atchison Kansas in 1984 to be near family and it was at that time, he began his career in teaching with USD 409 as a special education teacher above the Nies Furniture Store. He went on to earn his Masters degree in Special Education from Kansas State University and dedicated many years to Atchison High School until his retirement in May 2011. During his teaching career he coached football, basketball and track. Jim was very proud of the many years at Atchison High School and so loved all his fellow teachers, coaches and students he worked with throughout the years. It was his greatest passion to teach and coach. While growing up Jim was in Boy Scouts and earned the highest achievement of Eagle Scout and he was tapped into the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was very proud of both of these accomplishments.

Jim married Jane Ellerman on August 16, 1986, in Atchison, KS, she survives of the home. He is also survived by a daughter, Stephanie and Brian Drennon, Overland Park, KS, a son, William and Jill Bartlett, Atchison, KS, grandchildren; Logan, Parker, Greyson Drennon and William Bartlett, II, Jordy, Jessa Brooks, two brothers; Tom (Kim) Bartlett, Atchison, KS, Steve (Karen) Bartlett, Camden Point, MO, two sisters; Margo (David) Suhler, Severance, CO, Sandy (Mark) Dennis, Oakley, KS, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Bartlett.
