Sterling Johns, 62, of Creston, died January 26, 2022, at Greater Regional Health in Creston surrounded by his loved ones. A Celebration of life services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 30, 2022, at Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Avenue in Creston. The family requests casual dress, as they will be. Pastor Tim Maxa will officiate. The service will be live streamed. Open visitation with family receiving friends 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Burial will be at the Graceland Cemetery in Creston. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to his family to be determined at a later date. Online condolences given at www.powersfh.com. Sterling “Ster” Michael Johns, was born October 25, 1959, in Guttenberg, Iowa., the son of David M. and Sharon K. (Turner) Johns. The family moved to Creston in 1960. Sterling was educated in the Creston Schools. He participated in wrestling and football. He was inducted into the wrestling hall of fame in 2018. When he was younger, he enjoyed life in the fast lane as he raced motorcycles and stockcars. He was united in marriage to Sandra Willets in 1977. To this union two children were born, Michael David and Sonya Elaine. Sterling and Sandy later divorced. On March 1, 2002, Sterling married Lisa J. (Cook) Merritt in Las Vegas, Nevada. He gained two children with this marriage Janelle Annette and Jayrd Allen. He worked at Vanmark, Max Smith Construction, the Post Office as a HCR driver, and later in life he enjoyed the freedom of self-employment with mowing, snow removal and building custom sheds. Sterling was a member of the Whitetails Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and taking motorcycle trips with friends. There was never an adventure he would turn down. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and enjoy a cold beverage with a good friend. He was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR. He continued to give even in death by being an organ donor. Sterling is survived by his wife Lisa Johns of Creston; a son, Michael Johns of Creston; daughter, Sonya (Jason) Clayton of Creston; a step-daughter Janelle (Josh) Hamilton of Afton; a stepson Jayrd (Jacquie) Merritt of Cromwell; two sisters, Shelly Hanson of Ankeny and Annette (Wolfgang) Brummel of Peru; father & mother-in-law Jim and Donella Cook of Creston; 10 grandchildren, Paige, Max, Ryan, Rachel, Chasity, Mason, Katie, Cameron, Presley and Asher; two great-grandsons, Bryson and Noah; three nieces; two great-nephews; one great-niece; many other cherished family members, special family members, Chris, Lisa, Austin “Dennis the Menace” Murray, and friends too numerous to count. Sterling was preceded in death by his parents, David and Sharon, grandparents Max and Sylvia Johns, Wayne and Urania Turner, his brothers from another mother, Randy Hagle and Ralph Marxen. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
