Ethel Helen Thom, 97, of Springfield, IL, died on January 25, 2022, at Concordia Village in Springfield, IL. She was born on August 11, 1924, in Oak Park, IL, the daughter of Paul and Elsa Froetscher. She married Richard H. Thom on September 21, 1946. Her husband, parents, and brother, Leroy Froetscher, preceded her in death. Ethel was a homemaker, a wonderful mother, grandmother, “Nonny” to her grandchildren, and great-grandmother. She was a good friend to those who knew her. Ethel was a member of the First Congregational Church in Springfield. She was a talented craftsperson, seamstress, and knitter, making many unique creations for her friends and family. She was well-liked at her Concordia home by residents and staff alike. She will be greatly missed by her family; one son, Richard (wife, Karen) Thom of Jefferson City, MO; daughter, Kathy (husband, John Fisherkeller) Handy of Springfield, IL; grandchildren, Jenny (husband, Jeff) Hester of Oklahoma City, OK, Alena Thom of Castro Valley, CA, Jim (wife, Allison) Handy of Bainbridge Island, WA, Chris (wife, Minran) Handy of The Netherlands, Matt (wife, Zuelmi Maradiaga Hernandez) Handy of Nicaragua; much loved niece, Paulette (husband, Jim) Lynn of Dubuque, IA. She also leaves six great-grandchildren. Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. A private family Memorial Ceremony will be held at a later date. The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 S. Grand Ave. West, Springfield.
