Obituary
Judith Helen “Judy” (Janssen) Etling passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022, at St John’s Hospital. She was born on March 7, 1944, in Springfield, the daughter of Edna (Kamp) Janssen and Jack G. Janssen. Judy was preceded in death by her sister, Christine Herndon and step-grandson, Zander Slightom. She is survived by her husband, Wayne Etling; daughters, Karen Wieties of Springfield, Kris Jakubik of Brandon, FL, and Lori Wieties of Springfield; one stepdaughter, Lynne Slightom of Riverton; grandchildren, Nick Vail of Springfield, Kari Everest of Clearwater, FL, and Kelli and Katherine Jakubik of Brandon, FL; brother, John Janssen of Pickens, SC; one step-grandson, Quinn Slightom of Riverton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Judy attended Ursuline Academy in Springfield and graduated from Easley High School in Easley, SC. She was employed at Sangamo Electric, The Pool Center, Capitol Aviation, Marine Bank, and the Illinois Court System. After leaving the Court System, Judy started a basket weaving business called Reed full Things. She sold her baskets at art fairs throughout the Springfield area. When Judy and Wayne moved to Long Island, NY, she continued the business In Suffolk and Nassau counties, winning several best in show titles. When she moved back to Springfield, Judy decided she would like to take up painting. Judy took lessons at the Springfield Art Association and created many paintings for her friends and family. She liked to paint with a “whimsical” theme. Paintings such as “Abe-Rite”, Honest Abe standing by his Lincoln Continental in front of the Maid-Rite on West Jefferson. “Hunka-Hunka Waffle House”, Elvis and his pink Cadillac headed into a Waffle House and “Prom Night in Des Moines”, a parking lot full of tractors in front of a Pizza Hut. Judy had a great sense of humor. She loved all animals but especially hummingbirds. She loved to watch them at the feeders in the back yard and traveled to Rockport, Texas for the annual hummingbird festival where she was able to band one of the hummers. Judy was a beautiful, talented, loving, caring person. All those who knew and loved her were fortunate to have her as part of their life. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings. Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, with Fr. George Nellikunnel officiating. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
