Donald Wilburn Matthews, 68, husband of Karen Lee Matthews, of Coward, SC, passed away at his home on January 22, 2022 on a beautiful, snowy morning surrounded by family after a long illness. 

Don was born on July 6, 1953, son of the late Wilburn and Gaynell Matthews. He was a long-time employee of Vulcraft in Florence, SC and an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved cooking for friends and family, and when BBQ was on the menu, people came from all over to share and fellowship with us. He enjoyed family gatherings, loving on his grandbabies and driving country roads on Sunday afternoons. Don could throw a baseball like no one else in Coward and was known for his fast pitch. His family was able to witness him praying and growing closer to the Lord toward the end of his life. In the last few days, he reassured everyone that he was at peace and would see us again one day.

He is preceded in death by his brother Terry Matthews, his sister Norma Jean Matthews, grandson Mikaele Matthews and granddaughter Audrey Matthews. Surviving are his wife Karen Matthews of 49 years, Daughters Stephanie Purvis (Charlie) of Florence, SC and Alaina Evans (Jeff) of Bluffton, SC and Son Mickey Matthews (Trianna) of Lake City, SC; grandchildren Elijah and Sofie Purvis, Trace (Jessica) Matthews, Ethan, Brandon, Eva, Ava and their mother, Tia, Stephon Matthews and Reaghan Evans; great grandchildren Aria and Ariyah Matthews; his sister, Lois Miles and many family members that he loved so much. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, January 24, 2022 at Grace Free Will Baptist Church in Lake City with burial to follow at St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery in Coward.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.
