<p>On Wednesday January 19th, 2022 Melba Evelyn Stewart of Portage la Prairie Manitoba, passed away peacefully at Lions Prairie Manor at the age of 90 years.</p> <p>Melba was born in MacGregor on Feb 15, 1931, the daughter of James and Margaret Mitchell. She went to grade school in MacGregor and grew up in several communities including Katrime and later in the Macaulay area. Her parents bought the Pine Creek General Store and Post Office in 1946 and later moved to Castle Point where they continued to run the store.</p> <p>It was while working in the Pine Creek General Store that Melba met and married Albert Clayton Stewart. They were married on July 4th 1953 and lived on the farm at Pine Creek where they raised their three sons. In 1998 they bought a house in Austin. Clayton unfortunately passed away before moving to town. Together they shared forty-five years of marriage.</p> <p>Melba successfully completed her teacher training at the &ldquo;Normal School&rdquo; in Winnipeg in 1949-1950. Her first teaching job was at a school in Linwood, MB. Melba taught several grades in Austin Elementary School in the Pine Creek School Division from 1969 &ndash; 1982.&nbsp; Melba also worked at the Sprucedale Workshop.</p> <p>Melba and Clayton were the proud parents of&nbsp; Bryan, Laurie, and Ross. The boys families consist of Bryan and Georgette with children Sonia (Derek); her children Mitchell (Sam and Reid) Keirstyn (Tony and Blake), Aiden; Jackie (Cody) and children Alyssa, Colton, Landon, Tenley; Garnet (Ashley) and their children Isabelle and Emily. Laurie (Sharon)&nbsp; daughter Meagan (Anders) and children Sanna and Lochlan, daughter Haley, Carmen (Devon) , Ross (Nadine) and girls Paige (Kory) and Brianna (Ryan).</p> <p>Melba was predeceased by her parents James and Margaret Mitchell, brother Sam Mitchell in 2000, sister Florence Snaith in 2013, husband Clayton in 1998, granddaughter Haley Stewart in 1997, granddaughter Courtney Stewart in 1995, and husband Albert Doucette in 2015.</p> <p>Melba married Albert Doucette in 2002 and together they moved to Portage la Prairie Oddfellows Towers in 2005. In 2017, with failing health, Melba moved into the Lions Prairie Manor.</p> <p>&nbsp;Melba was a kind and gentle soul. Her boys and grandchildren noting her keen and accurate reflexes when holding a wooden spoon or fly swatter!</p> <p>Melba had a love of music and was an avid piano player. She was active in music throughout her youth and into her final years.&nbsp; At the age of eighty, she bought her first computer and taught herself to chord on the piano. She joined the band,&ldquo;Al and Friends, and for several years the band entertained in Care Homes throughout the Southern region. Dancing was a spin off of her love of music and a shared joy throughout her life.</p> <p>Melba had a love of gardening. She always had a huge vegetable garden on the farm and continued growing flowers in her greenhouse into retirement.</p> <p>She spent many years involved in 4-H at Pine Creek.&nbsp; Melba was a 4-H Leader and supported her boys through several 4-H programs.</p> <p>Melba was on the History Book Committee in Austin for the RM of North Norfolk and had the finished book on display for all to see.</p> <p>Melba&#39;s family would like to thank the Doctors of the Portage Clinic and the staff on Walker Road for their excellent care while she was a resident of the Lions Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie.</p> <p>A private family service will be held at later date.</p> <p>In lieu of flowers donations can be made, if you choose, to the North Norfolk Foundation</p> <p>Clarke&#39;s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
