Peter Hildebrand Obituary

PETER HILDEBRAND

Peter was born in Morris, Manitoba, being the second oldest of 8 children. He grew up on a farm North East of Lowe Farm, raised in a home where his parents relied on the guidance of our Heavenly Father. After arriving home from each family trip, his Dad would always be sure to say “Thank you Lord, we got home safely.” When hard times fell upon the family, his Dad reminded them of their grandfather born in Russia who would say the verse found in Job 1:21, “The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh, blessed be the name of the Lord.”

While attending DVBS through Canadian SS Mission (founded by Uncle Dr. Henry Hildebrand from Caronport), both Peter at 11 years and his sister Jessie at 12 years received Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, based on the passage John 3:16. At age 17 and Jessie at age 18, they were baptized upon their confession of faith and joined the Sperling MB Church.

After high school, Peter first went to Winkler Bible Institute and then to Winnipeg to search for a job. God blessed Peter with multiple options, working in a nickel mine, construction at Peter Loewen’s, sales at Kresge’s and Eaton’s, and selling life insurance (just to name a few). Peter and Jessie went to a concert where Peter met Marge Regier. Married in 1957, Peter and Marge joined the Southend MB Church and later transferred to PAMB Church. They had 4 children, Gerald, Shirley, Harvey and Dennis.

In Winnipeg, Peter and his brother-in-law Jake Falk, started a shingling/roofing business. In 1965, God called Jake and Jessie to serve in missions. That completed the business partnership between Jake and Peter. In 1969, Peter, Marge and family moved to Boissevain where they began farming with Peter’s youngest brother Bill and wife, Hilda. After they were both established, they separated and started their own farms.

October 29, 1985, Peter lost Marge in a tragic car accident caused by a deer. He then married a high school sweetheart, Anne Kehler/Dueck who lost her husband, Melvin in 1985. Anne has 5 children, Cindy, Reg, Kent, Rhonda, and Joe. Peter and Anne attended Boissevain MB Church and later when they moved to Winnipeg, the Fort Garry MB Church.

Along with Peter’s devotion to the Lord, Peter loved his family. He also enjoyed hearing about the boys and the farm in addition to the different paths and professions of his children, inherited children and grandchildren. He greatly missed the weekly coffee times with his brother Dave who passed away at 82 years. He also mourned the loss of his sister Jessie, brothers-in-law, John and Tony. From Marge’s side, Peter mourned the loss of Abe Regier, Pete and Anne Regier, Henry and Agatha Toews, Henry and Katie Berg. Still with us are Marie Regier, Jake and Martha Regier. To the end, he was able to enjoy many conversations with his remaining siblings, Helena, Bill, Linda, Ruth and all his in-laws. Peter believed passionately in family unity and put much energy into encouraging and loving his siblings.

Peter is lovingly remembered by his wife Anne, children Gerald and Brenda Hildebrand, Shirley and Robert Penner, Harvey and Dolly Hildebrand, Dennis and Cheryl Hildebrand, 10 grandchildren with their spouses and 22 great grandchildren: and inherited children Cindy and Del Fast, Reg Dueck, Kent and Sandy Dueck, Rhonda and Howard Bergstresser and Joe and Karen Dueck, 13 grandchildren with 4 spouses and 5 great grandchildren.

Peter survived farm accidents, operations, multiple cancers, strokes, diabetes, near death infections and more. He said God, in His mercy and grace, always restored him. Every day, Peter praised God for His goodness to him. When Peter interviewed for Donwood PCH, he was asked to share a little about himself. He said, “I am a Christian, a born-again believer and I love the Lord.”

Peter lived his life based on the scripture Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39. “And He said to him, You shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it. You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, Peter met Jesus face to face. Oh what a glorious day that must have been!
