Graham Walker Obituary

Graham Walker passed away at home, suddenly and unexpectedly on January 17, 2022. He was born on December 31, 1955 in Ellon, Scotland to Christina Reid and James Adam Walker. He attended primary schools in St. Cyrus and Elgin and secondary school at Fraserburgh Academy. Graham earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland and earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Southampton University, Southampton, England.

He married the love of his life, Agnes Murray, from her parents’ home in Prince George’s County, Maryland. They made their home in New York City, where their three sons were born. Graham worked as a Research Engineer in the Courant Institute of New York University, and in 1986 began his academic teaching career at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. The family returned to New York City in 1993 for Graham to teach at Manhattan College in the Bronx, where he was a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the time of this death. He also taught adjunct mechanical engineering courses in the graduate school of Columbia University since the mid-2000s. His love of education manifested in his work as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Manhattan College, mentoring students and colleagues alike throughout his career, and conducting research on topics in orthodontics and biomechanics.

Graham’s eclectic range of interests, from lichens, mosses and rocks to British mystery shows, poetry and photography, demonstrate his lifelong love of learning about the world. He participated in many Community Service activities, including working with students in the FIRST Robotics competition at both Bronx Science and Samuel Gompers High Schools, he participated in Campus Ministry projects including service trips to Honduras with Manhattan College students, and he acted as coach for various sports teams his sons played on. He is known for his love of books and his love of collecting books on a vast range of subjects. Graham’s gregarious and warm nature drew people to him in any setting, often cracking corny jokes to get a laugh from others. He adored children and cats, taking every opportunity to snuggle and play with them. Graham was steadfast in his opinions, especially in support of social equality.

Graham is survived by his wife, Agnes, his sons John, Martin (Jenny) and Christopher (Colleen), as well as his granddaughter Aoife, the joy of his life.
