Obituary

Mary Agnes Chavez, 81, of Salt Lake City, UT, passed away on January 12th, 2022 after battling dementia for several years.

Mary was born on December 3rd, 1940 to David and Lily Galvez in Costilla, New Mexico. She married Donald R Chavez on May 3rd, 1958 (later divorced). They went on to have two wonderful children, Janie and Lonnie.

Mary always took pride in the fact that she was a single mother and worked hard to provide for her children to ensure they never did without. As a Grandmother (Granny) she would love to spoil her grandkids with all sorts of treasures she would find at her local Sears, her favorite store, which she would walk to weekly until the day it closed.

Mary never learned how to drive, she walked or utilized public transportation everywhere she went and did not let that stop her from living life and getting things done. Mary was never one to bite her tongue and always said what was on her mind, whether you wanted to hear it or not.  It was her passion and feisty spirit that helped her fight off the dementia for as long as she could, in the end she was looking forward to being reunited with her Daughter and the Lord.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Janie Chavez Hansen. She is survived by her son Lonnie Chavez (wife, Stephanie) and her grandkids Selena Hansen, Jovani Chavez and Jazlynn Chavez.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022 at 11:00 am at Anderson & Goff Mortuary, 11859 South 700 East, Draper, UT 84020. A catered luncheon will follow the services.

We would like to express much appreciation and gratitude to the aides, nurses and staff of Lakeridge Assisted Living for their kindness, compassion and loving care of our Mother, Mary.

“Kindness can transform someone’s dark moment with a blaze of light. You never know how much your caring matters. Make a difference for someone today.”
