James "Jim" Ronald Thomson

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of James (Jim) Ronald Thomson of Bridgewater and formerly Lantz, peacefully in South Shore Regional Hospital, January 11th, 2022, at the age of 81. Born in Halifax Jim moved to Lantz at six years of age with his late mother and father, Jim and Lillian Thomson and sister Joan where the family owned and ran the Endale canteen. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Karen and son, Derek. He is survived by sons, Michael James (Susan) Thomson Seattle Washington; Shawn Douglas Thomson (Bonnie), Lantz, and cherished grandsons, MacQuarrie Goodfellow Thomson, and Mitchell Goodfellow Thomson, Seattle; sister Joan (Fred) MacDonald Bridgewater. Jim also leaves two very special friends, Emily Oickle and Laurie Mossman of Bridgewater.

After retiring from DND Halifax, Jim and his late wife Karen became the owner and operators of the Argyll Inn in Bridgewater which Jim continued to do until his passing. Jim was in his youth a talented athlete playing hockey and baseball. He enjoyed many successes in junior and senior baseball and local and provincial hockey. Following his playing days, he became both a financial supporter of minor and junior hockey in East Hants. In 1968 he stared a decade long association with Minor and Midget Hockey in East Hants as a Trainor and Coach. In 1969 he became coach of the East Hants Penguins of the Metro Valley League, a role he filled for seven years. Jim also was assistant coach of the Nova Scotia Winter games teams in 1975 and 1979 when the team won silver medals. Jim also was an administrator and was an executive with the Metro Valley Junior Hockey League. In 1988 Jim received a Service Award from Sports Nova Scotia. Jim was elected a member of the East Hants Sports Hall of Fame.

Jim will be remembered as a wonderful family man, hardworking and community minded. Jim was always prepared to go the distance for anyone in need of assistance. Funeral Arrangements are being handled by Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. There will be no funeral service at Jim’s request and a private family service will be held at a later date. In memory of Jim, he would ask you to help your neighbour, a friend, or a person in need with a helping hand or a heartfelt donation. The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of South Shore Regional Hospital for their exception care provided to Jim.
