Marianne Johanna Young

Marianne Johanna Young our beloved mother and Oma passed away early the morning of January 10th, 2022 at the age of 95 due to natural causes and complications related to Covid-19.

Born on October 11, 1926 in Steinpleis, Zwickau-Sachsen (Saxony) Germany to Johanna Marie Gerstner Suhrmann and Max Arthur Fugmann.  She was later adopted by Johanna’s husband and her step father Emil Suhrmann..  Marianne had an older brother; Rolf Fugmann who died at 18  in a drowning accident.  She would come to know her half- sister Sorita Kubitzky in her youth, lost contact, and then had a happy reunion later in life in America.

Marianne was raised by a faithful mother; Johanna Marie, who taught her about hard work, running a business, had an open door to missionaries and taught her about the Savior and the LDS church.  Marianne was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1944, when she was 18 years old.  

Marianne fell in love and married Horst Leo Young August 14, 1948 and they were later sealed together in the Jordan River temple.  Marianne and horst had 51 wonderful years together.  Marianne became a widow when Horst passed in 1999 on the day they were moving to Draper. 

Mom was a pioneer and gave so much, so we would all have more.  Marianne and Horst escaped from East Germany, in the spring of 1950 when Marianne was 8 months pregnant with their first child Monika.  After living in Frankfurt, West Germany for three years they immigrated to America and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah in March of 1953.  They went on to have two more children, Loretta and Rick.  

The American Dream came true for the Young family at a German store called “Marianne’s Delicatessen”.  Marianne and Horst owned the German deli and restaurant in Salt Lake City from 1957 until 1994.   Here, they were known for serving their famous German potato salad, sauerkraut, bratwurst and wieners. They also sold chocolates, pickles, gummi bears, other assorted candies and German Imports.   The deli became a hub for the German community.  Missionaries were always welcomed with a free meal.   Many a school group, businessmen and church leaders stopped by daily for lunch and to visit. 

Marianne and Horst were Icon’s in the German community from their early days on.  They were active in the German soccer club Alemania, participated in numerous German dances and social events over the years.  They were instrumental in starting Oktoberfest at Snowbird Utah in the early 70’s.   Marianne loved her German heritage and her associations with her many friends.    She was a great storyteller and would marvel people with stories of her amazing life and experiences.  She enjoyed her KaffeeKlatsch or lunch club with her girlfriends and their many outings.   In her later years she would be tapping her feet to the music at Snowbird during Oktoberfest with her Oktoberfest friends. 

Marianne loved to travel and show her friends America.   Her trips included Salt Lake, the temple, Snowbird, Southern Utah then California to see the ocean. The trip would always stop in Las Vegas to see her friends Siegfried and Roy and then back to Salt Lake. 

Marianne and Horst raised their family in the Ensign Downs neighborhood where they lived for 35 years.  She had many fond memories of this time in her life.   Marianne enjoyed annual trips to Lake Tahoe with her children and friends.   Swim parties at the house and picnics at Brighton and of course Oktoberfest.  When Rick was about 18 his friend Jon McBride lived with the family for about a year and Marianne referred to him as her “other son” from then on.   Marianne adopted Jon and many others into her family over the years.

After retirement Marianne moved to Draper, Utah where she lived from 1999 until 2019. During her time in Draper, she made many new friends and enjoyed attending her South Mountain Ward and serving in and attending the Jordan River Temple.   She has been a resident at Cedarwood Independent living in Sandy, Utah since April 2019.  Here she made new friends and enjoyed being able to remain independent.

Marianne had a great love for her family.  She was a devoted mother to Loretta during her life.   Her joy was her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, whom she always enjoyed spending time with.  Her family will be forever grateful for the opportunities she provided.  She will be missed by many as she touched so many lives wherever she went.  Her memories and wisdom will live-on forever.  

Marianne is survived by her daughter Monika Young Olschewski and her three children Jonathan, Lehi and Johanna Maria.  Her son, Richard John Young and his wife Leah and their children, Kyle, Zane, Logan and Cooper.  Her half- sister Sorita Kubitzky in Germany, plus three great grandchildren, Forrest, Dean and Miles.  Marianne was preceded in death by her husband Horst Leo Young, her mother Johanna Suhrmann, father Emil Suhrmann, brother Rolf Fugmann and daughter Loretta Young and many close and dear friends.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11 am at the South Mountain 7th Ward, 272 E Traversepoint Drive, Draper, Utah.   A viewing will take place prior to the services from 10:00 to 10:45 am.    A viewing will also take place Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Anderson & Goff Mortuary.  11859 South 700 East, Draper, UT.  Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
