ROBERT RANDOLPH “RANDY” CARTER, 57, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 4:10 am at his home in Clifton, VA. His fiancé, Madelyn Smith, and her son, Kempton Bonds were at his side. Randy was born on March 6, 1964 in Richmond, VA to Charles Hill (“Hill”) Carter, Jr. and Helle Klingemann Carter (both deceased) and grew up at the Hill-Carter family home, Shirley. He attended Saint Christopher’s School in Richmond from Kindergarten through High School. In High School he played basketball, football, and lacrosse. He attended Virginia Tech where he graduated from the Pamplin College of Business. While at Virginia Tech Randy was an active brother of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 1990, Randy and his brother, Charles, started and ran a sporting clays business on the family farm before Randy moved to Louisiana in 1995. In Louisiana Randy ran a 5,000-acre hunting and fishing preserve. In 1998 Randy moved back to the Richmond, Virginia area and later co-managed the family tourism business, where he was instrumental in preserving Shirley’s history and natural resources in a permanent conservation easement. In 2018 Randy moved to Clifton, Virginia to be with Madelyn. While living in Clifton he worked for Seneca Hills Animal Hospital where he managed the building operations. Randy’s love of nature was limitless. Randy was an avid and accomplished goose and duck hunter as well as fisherman. He found solitude at a young age in the marsh, where hunting and fishing gave him peace away from the hustle of the visitors touring the house in which he lived. Wherever he went he was searching for game preserves, always wanting to return to explore further. When not hunting for ducks or geese he was often seen scouting waterfowl. He would prowl the marshes of Shirley for hours making mental records for future hunts as well as for the love of the birds. And if not hunting or scouting birds, then he would be searching for a peaceful, yet bountiful fishing hole. He was a quiet man who surrounded himself with those that had a lot to say. Randy’s quiet demeaner, southern charm, and gentle heart was known and loved by all that met him. He always treated others in the manner in which he wished to be treated, regardless of their walk-of-life. Truly a kind man. Randy is survived by his older brother Charles Hill Carter, III, (his wife Lauren Murphy Carter and their children Lela Grace Carter and Charles Hill Carter, IV) and his younger sister Harriett Carter Pittman (her husband Kevin Rice Pittman and their son William Carter Pittman). A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at Randy’s beloved family home, Shirley (501 Shirley Plantation Road, Charles City, VA 23230). Internment in the Carter family cemetery will follow the memorial service (weather permitting). The family extends an invitation to a celebration of Randy’s life following internment.
