John David Van Winkle Obituary
Mr. John David Van Winkle, 43, of Richmond, affectionately known as “J.D”, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at the Compassionate Care Center surrounded by his family and loved ones.
He was born in Lexington, Kentucky on March 31, 1978. He was the son of Charles Van Winkle and Sandra Nantz Van Winkle, both of Richmond. He was a 1996 graduate of Madison Central High School, where he excelled in baseball and football. In the fall of 1996 J.D. began his college career at Eastern Kentucky University. That semester was abruptly cut short due to an automobile accident, which left him a paraplegic at the young age of 18. After extensive rehabilitation, J.D. returned to EKU and graduated in 2002 with a bachelors degree in manufacturing technology with an emphasis in quality control. He worked as a quality control manager at Central Kentucky Processing for several years until his health began to decline.
In February of 2010, J.D. was blessed beyond measure by the birth of his only child, Preston Van Winkle, whom he leaves behind. Preston was not only his son, but the pride and joy of his entire life. He was his constant companion, his “fishing buddy” his “helper” and his greatest love. J.D. was a member of The Faith Baptist Church. Throughout his life, he never lost his love of sports, fishing, hunting and bonfires. He was an animal lover and avid gardener. He took pride in his beautiful flowers, tomatoes and cucumbers.
In addition to his parents, Charles and Sandra, he is survived by his son Preston, two sisters: Michele Van Winkle and Rene Meadows, two nephews: Samuel Shearer (Brooklyn) and Brenden Kirby; two nieces: Sophia Sanchez (Hector) and Brittany Tingle; two great-nephews: Axeton Sawyer and Maverick Shearer as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday, January 10, 2022, at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Bro. John McCord and Pastor John Doss officiating. Burial will follow at Madison Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
