Theodore Robinson

Theodore Robinson of Naples, FL and New York City—beloved husband, uncle, and friend—died on January 1, 2022 at the age of 90.  He was born in New York City April 12, 1931, the son of Edna and William Robinson. Ted was a man of great charm, wit, and warmth who travelled the world and who enjoyed an outstanding career as a radiologist.

Ted had a half-century-long career as a New York radiologist.  He began and ended his service at Columbia University, where he received his B.A. in 1952, completed medical school in 1956, and trained as a resident at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.  He finished his career as an attending radiologist at the same institution.  Prior to his residency, Ted served as a commissioned officer for the U.S. Public Health Service, working at the National Institutes of Medicine.   He held academic appointments at Cornell University Medical College (1962-1968), the State University of New York/Downstate Medical Center (where he was Professor of Clinical Radiology from 1970 to 1985 and supervised its radiology residency program), Albert Einstein College of Medicine (where he was Associate Professor of Radiology from 1991-1993), and Columbia University College of Physicians (where he served as Professor of Clinical Radiology from 1993 to 1999).   He was a Visiting Professor and much sought-after instructor at various medical schools and hospitals in the US and overseas, including St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, England and the Medical College of Ohio.  His academic activities also included clinical research, which formed the basis of his two dozen published papers, reviews, and abstracts. 

In addition, Ted held numerous hospital appointments, including at Brooklyn and Long Island - Jewish hospitals, and he chaired or directed the radiology departments at Fordham (1965-1967), Queens (1985-1993) and Kings County hospitals (1973-1985); he also served as the supervisor of the radiology residency program at Roosevelt hospital.  In each of these hospital appointments, his medical skills quickly made him a popular consultant to large numbers of their attending physician staffs  He was a member of many medical societies, and his good sense and judgment were recognized by his election to a number of offices and committee assignments both in them and in the hospitals where he worked.  Spending his career in a field which usually produces practitioners with narrow fields of interest, Ted remained able and productive within the entire range of radiology, to which his extensive and admirable accomplishments attest.

Ted loved to travel with his wife Jo Ann, especially throughout Europe, Asia, and Oceania.  Countries he and Jo Ann especially enjoyed visiting included France, Italy, India, Thailand, Singapore, and New Zealand.  Later in his life, he spent significant periods of time in the south of France where he enjoyed taking intensive French language courses.

After retiring as a radiologist, Ted was active in his condominium association in Naples, FL: he served as a board member of Covington Row at the Crescent Condominium Association, as well as a board member of the Crescent Recreation Association.  He was an avid tennis player and appeared regularly at the Pelican Bay Tennis Courts.  A generous man, he also supported local charities and underserved people in health care.

Ted will be missed deeply by his wife Jo Ann (Crouse) with whom he enjoyed 46 years of marriage; by his nephews Geoffrey Robinson and David and James Loewenstein; by his nieces Dorothy Robinson and Nina Loewenstein; and by numerous grandnieces and cousins.  Ted was also very fond of his cats, including Digby, Sister, and Tino, treating them as warmly as he treated his family.  Ted was predeceased by his sisters Gloria Robinson and Bernice Loewenstein.
