Portsmouth – Shirley Gloria Fishbein, 89, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2022, at the RWJ University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, NJ. Shirley was born on January 28, 1932, in Hartford, Connecticut. She grew up on Garden Street in Hartford with her parents Jack and Lillian Lessow, and her brothers, Herb and Albert. Her father was a fruit peddler and her mother was a seamstress. She attended Weaver High School and completed her education at Willimantic College (now Eastern Connecticut State). She became a fourth-grade elementary school teacher in the Boston area. She married her husband, Elliott, and moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she had two daughters, Sheri and Amy. She lived most of her life in Portsmouth, where she was beloved by her family and friends. Shirley was known for her positive outlook and for having many friends in the community. She was a very nonjudgmental person who had a calm disposition. She enjoyed having long conversations with her friends and would always dedicate her time to a friend in need. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She would travel six hours by car to attend every birthday party and recital. She had a passion for baking and party planning. She made delicious chicken, chocolate chip cookies, and meringues. Her annual Fourth of July Party was widely anticipated throughout the year, where she would make her famous lobster salad and strawberry shortcake. Shirley was a staple in the Portsmouth community. She was very involved in the Sisterhood at Temple Israel, where she was a member for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Wentworth by the Sea Pool Club for many years. She deeply cared for her husband of 60 years, Elliott; her two children Sheri Fishbein Siller and Amy Fishbein Koslow; their husbands, Randy Siller and Greg Koslow; and her grandchildren Danielle, Emma, and Isabella. Shirley is preceded in death by her brothers, Dr. Herbert Lessow and Albert Lessow. Services: A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Temple Israel Cemetery, Banfield Road, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of her close relationship with her mother Lillian Lessow, who passed from colon cancer.
