Claire Sylvia (Daigle) Mattson Obituary

HALLOWELL -Claire Sylvia Daigle of Hallowell, 87, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2022, in Augusta, Maine. Claire was born on November 19, 1934, in Fort Kent, Maine. She was the eldest daughter of Joseph Registe Daigle and Cecile Ida (Saucier) Daigle. She was raised in Daigle, Maine on the family potato farm, and graduated from Fort Kent High School in 1952. Claire met Charles Mattson, the love of her life and husband of 66 years, in Stockholm, Maine where Charles lived. He had just returned home from the Korean War, and noticed a young woman with a quick wit and bright eye at a local grocery store. They fell in love and were soon married in Daigle, Maine on May 14th, 1955. Not long after they moved to Gardiner, Maine where they set up a home, eventually building a house on Fairview Street where they raised their young family. Claire worked for Depositor’s Trust Company and later co-founded Mattson Wallpaper and Paint with Charles in downtown Gardiner. This business grew over the years to include stores in Augusta and Waterville. Claire handled the finances of the company and kept a steady hand on the books, often doing them at night at the kitchen table. Claire loved physical fitness, particularly tennis and golf which she excelled at. She also enjoyed fishing with Charles, her children and grandchildren, and was always ready for an adventure on the water. She was also an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing various feasts for the family and she loved growing her own vegetables. She was resolute, supremely hardworking, and very independent. Claire loved to travel, and visited such faraway places as Morocco, Egypt, Israel and Peru just to name a few. Nothing was as important to Claire as her family. She is survived by her husband Charles, 90, of Hallowell. They were an inseparable team who were rarely apart over the 66 years of their marriage. Claire is also survived by her three children, Todd Mattson and wife Mimi of Manchester, Susan Warren and husband Mike of Pittston, and Kevin Mattson and wife Jeanne of Freeport, her grandchildren Aaron, Adam, Mathew, Trevor, Fionn and Ronan and her great grandchildren Gage, Reagan, Sierra, Lilly and Thor. She is also survived by her sister Mabeline Small and husband Frank of Whitefield, and her brother, James Daigle of Fort Kent, as well as several nieces and nephews who she adored and loved dearly. She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Joel, Louis and Lewellyn Daigle and sister, Florence McLaughlin. Her family would like to express their deep and heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Maine General Medical Center, especially those at Glenridge Rehabilitation Center and Granite Hill Estates, for their amazing gift of unparalleled compassion and care. These dedicated people are essentially angels on earth in our eyes for all that they do every day for families like Claire’s and we cannot put in words how grateful we are to them for their support over the last few years. There will be a private family service to celebrate Claire’s life. The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a contribution to Maine General hospice care at www.give.mainegeneral.org. Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
