Helen Horber Obituary

NOTE: Given the current COVID-19 situation and for the protection of all , ALL VISITORS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A MASK TO ENTER THE FUNERAL HOME.

Helen Horber, 97, formerly of Clifton, NJ and currently of Washington, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Helen was born Helene Brendli on October 10, 1924, in Hamroth, Romania to Franz Brendli and Maria Steinbinder. On October 27, 1947, she married Johann, “John”, Horber in Martinszell, Germany and together they had three children: Rosemarie, John Jr., and Nancy.

On March 15, 1952, Helen, her husband, and their daughter, Rosemarie, immigrated from Frankfurt, Germany to the United States of America aboard a retired U.S. Army ship, the S. D. Sturgis. They were received at Ellis Island that day, and their family’s journey is commemorated on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor there.

John Sr.’s sister sponsored them into the United States, and they briefly lived in Linden, New Jersey before settling down in Clifton. Helen started her own cleaning business working for commercial and private clients in the Clifton area, was an active member of Holy Trinity Church throughout her life and retired there. In 2015, after nearly 60 years of living on Knapp Avenue, she sold her home and moved to Washington, NJ to live with her daughter Nancy and her family.

In her earlier life and retirement, Helen especially enjoyed volunteering for Holy Trinity Church, managing Bingo games, and traveling all over the country with the Senior Citizens group. Later in life, some of Helen’s favorite things to do included going out for a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts, playing Wii Bowling (and winning), sitting on the back porch watching the wildlife, and making her favorite Christmas cookies. In the last years of her life, Helen enjoyed teaching her granddaughter, Janine, how to cook the meals of her homeland and celebrate traditions through food. We remember Helen fondly for her humor and kindness, her passion for playing cards and gardening, and her endless generosity towards her family.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, John Horber (1990) and her granddaughter, Lisa LaManna (Jurkiewicz) (2020). Helen is survived by her daughter Rosemarie Jurkiewicz and husband Al, son John Horber Jr. and wife Betty, daughter Nancy Anderson and husband Dave, and her grandchildren, Craig Jurkiewicz, Janine Horber and her boyfriend Sean Ruddiman.

Family and friends and invited to pay their respects on Friday January 7, 2022 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Bizub-Quinlan Funeral Home, 515 Lexington Avenue in Clifton, NJ 07011.
