We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Delores Adeline (Downey) Kurtz, 86, at the Delwynda Court Personal Care Home on December 29, 2021.  Delores is lovingly remembered by her husband of 35 years Danny Kurtz, two brothers, five children, two stepchildren and each of their families, along with many relatives and friends.
The world became a little brighter when it welcomed Delores (Dodie), the eldest daughter of Arnold and Stella Downey, on August 20, 1935 in Hamiota, MB.  She was raised in Coulter, MB in a close and loving family.  Delores was very active in community organizations starting at an early age while attending school in Coultervale, MB and remained involved with various interests throughout her life.  These included:  the Coultervale CGIT, Coultervale Women’s Softball Team where she excelled, Coulter/Coultervale United Church Choir, Coulter/Coultervale UCW, Melita Curling Club, where she was a very accomplished skip most often teamed with three of her sisters-in-law, Melita Bowling League, Deloraine Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Lake Metigoshe Bible Study Group.  Delores was also a culinary master in the kitchen where she created delicious family meals with humility and grace.  A mere mention of one of her tasty creations brings vivid memories to anyone who had the good fortune to share a meal with her.
Without question, Family was very important to Dodie.  She was a loving and dedicated Mother to all of her own children, nurturing Grandmother to her many grandchildren/great grandchildren as well as the sympathetic surrogate Mom to others she met seeking a friendly shoulder and attentive ear.  Her credo, “Family Comes First”, is a value she instilled in all of those around her.  Our family would not be where it is today if we did not have Dodie (Gramma Dode) as our guiding inspiration and ideal role model. She was an exceptional Mom:  supportive, kind, strong, nurturing, dedicated, humorous and witty.  We will miss Gramma Dode dearly and will strive to keep her “Family Comes First” legacy alive.
Delores was predeceased by her parents, Arnold and Stella Downey of Coulter MB and little sister Lorna (age 7).  She was also predeceased by her first husband William Mallo of Coulter MB, with whom she shared the Wil-N-Del Farm in Sourisford.
Delores is survived by her husband Danny Kurtz, Deloraine PCH, two brothers, Wayne (Marilyn) Downey of Rocky Mountain House, AB; Bob (Betty) Downey of Coulter, MB and five children from her first marriage:  Greg (Cathy) Mallo of Winfield AB with grandchild Robyn (Ron); Lorna (Bryce) McMillan of Lake Metigoshe MB with grandchildren Triston (Justyna), Curtis (Kay), Michael (Ange); David (Kathy) Mallo of Maple Ridge BC with grandchildren Aaron (Jessica), Andrew (Jenna), Lauren (Kevin); Cheryl (Doug) VanSteelandt of Castle Rock CO with grandchildren Amanda, Krista (Logan), Kyle; and Cam (Lianne) Mallo of Carievale SK with grandchild Maytlind (Bowman).
She is also survived by Danny’s two daughters, Karen (Red) Metro of Bentley, AB with grandchildren Cody (Trish), Krista (Mark) and Debbie (Greg) Jahraus Devereaux of Leslieville, AB with grandchildren Lacey (Brent), Jace (Brianna).
Delores was also blessed with 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Delores was the strongest, kindest and most caring person you could ever meet and we were extremely blessed to have her as the head of our family.

A Celebration of Life for Delores will be held at the Waskada United Church on July 9, 2022, details to follow.

Forever in Our Hearts
