Johnny M. Walker, Colonel, U.S. Army (retired) passed away in the arms of his wife, daughter and son on Thursday, December 23, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas, from long term effects of COVID. Colonel Walker was born on January 7, 1947, in Borger, TX. In his 30-year career in the U.S. Army, Colonel Walker served as a combat medical evacuation helicopter pilot, troop commander, training director for combat medics, and Army Medical Department personnel director. His overseas assignments include Vietnam and the Republic of Panama. Colonel Walker is survived by his wife and best friend of 51 years, Martha Spinks; their children, Mollie Helen Walker and John Blake Walker; grandchildren Amelia Lara Grove, Benjamin Walker Grove, and Shane MacKay Fenten Walker; his brother Richard Dean Walker; nephews Carl and Alan Walker; his aunt Fanny Ray; his beloved cousin, Mary Harrington; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Junior Walker and Helen Joyce Hassell, for whom he was the dedicated family caregiver for five years.

 

Pall bearers are Carl Walker, Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force; Bobby Ehrig, Master Sergeant (ret), U.S. Army; Arsenio de Lara, Gunnery Sergeant (ret), U.S. Marine Corps; Glen Britt, Lieutenant Colonel (ret), U.S. Army; Alberto Saenz; and Terry Wallis.

Due to COVID, attendance at Porter Loring Mortuary is limited to those participating in the service. Outdoor services at Fort Sam Houston Military Cemetery allow for additional participants and require a mask. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Public Broadcasting Foundation, to honor Colonel Walker’s support of the PBS mission to advance education and truth as the foundation for defending and protecting the democracy he committed his life to.

Following interment at Fort Sam Houston Military Cemetery, family, friends, and others may preserve  Colonel Walker’s legacy on the national Veterans Legacy Memorial by posting memories and tributes, uploading images, sharing military service timeline and achievements, biographical information, historical documents and more.  The Veterans Administration usually creates a VLM profile page the day of the interment at the cemetery.
