David Louis Hemphill passed away December 21, 2021 at Bickford of Ames in Ames, Iowa. David is survived by his wife Shirley and three children Todd (Carol) of Urbandale, Tammy (Roger) Frost of Urbandale and Tracy (Dieter) Vees of Harbor City, California; four grandchildren Carson and Lindsay Hemphill and Marissa and Bethany Frost. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Kathleen White, brothers Edwin and Gerald. David was born September 19, 1940 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Floyd and Mary (Polak) Hemphill. While growing up in Marshalltown he caddied at Elmwood Country Club where he learned to play golf. He was a graduate of Marshalltown High School in 1958. Continued education at Marshalltown Junior College and graduated from State College of Iowa (University of Northern Iowa) in 1962 in education. On June 10, 1962 David and Shirley Nichols were united in marriage. They moved to Denison, Iowa where David started his teaching career as a 9th grade math teacher. After two years they moved to Nevada, Iowa where he taught high school math, coached golf, and worked on his master’s degree at Iowa State University. By the fall of 1969 David and family moved to Roland, Iowa where he started his career as Junior High principal, taught math, and coached boys’ basketball. After 35 years in education, he retired in 1997. David was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. During his golf playing days he got two hole-in-ones. Other pastimes David enjoyed was camping with family and friends, hiking, riding bikes, and working on puzzles. After retirement David and Shirley enjoyed camping, watching their grandchildren participate in sports and music events, and spending winters in Goodyear, Arizona. David was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His gentle demeaner will be missed by his family and friends. He chose to only see the good in other people.
