Lois K. Franklin Gardiner, Maine Obituary

Lois K. Franklin

AUBURN – Following her long, courageous journey living with Alzheimer’s, Lois K. Franklin, 85, of Auburn, Maine, died peacefully Saturday, December 18th, 2021. Lois was born in Phillips, Maine, on October 14th, 1936, the daughter of Theodore Richmond and Jennie “Peggy” (Lawrence) Richmond Pearl. Throughout the ups and downs of life, her beautiful, peaceful hometown of Phillips always held a special place in her heart. Lois married young, moved to Auburn, and became the mother of five children. She later faced adversity, and with selflessness, amazing strength, a quiet spirit, and immeasurable devotion, Lois raised her children alone. She worked in shoe manufacturing, various service jobs, and especially enjoyed her employment at Greenwood Orchards. After her children were grown, Lois enjoyed many happy years with her partner, Sheldon McLaughlin, in Turner. Lois was finally able to enjoy her days gardening, cooking, feeding birds, fishing, playing games, doing puzzles, and sitting quietly to appreciate the beauty of nature and wildlife. Lois was a member of the Turner Village Church and often volunteered at The Boofy Quimby Memorial Center Senior Dinners. Many will remember Lois as a caregiver. She lovingly assisted neighbors and family members in their time of need. Still, nothing made Lois happier than time spent with her growing family. To all of us blessed to call her Ma, Grammie, little (great) Grammie, extended family, or friend, we remain grateful for her godly example of true love. Lois endured many years of Alzheimer’s decline with the same great fortitude, acceptance, faith, and humility she exemplified throughout her life. She was predeceased by her parents; three brothers, Theodore (Bud) Richmond Jr, Carl Richmond, and Peter Richmond; two sisters, Beverly Raymond and Rhoda McLaughlin; and loving partner, Sheldon. Lois is survived by her five children; Gary Franklin and his wife Joyce of Oxford, Lana Michel and husband David of Auburn, Karen McLean and husband Daniel of Liberty, Wayne Franklin and wife Linda of Durham, and Van Franklin of Buckfeild and Phillips; seven grandchildren, Kelsey Sukeforth, Kate Adams, Jennifer Michel, Dylan McLean, Allie Gale, Evan and Kyle Franklin; four great grandchildren; Jackson, Lila, Bennett, and Laurel; as well as Allie, Connor, Leo, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Though our hearts are sad, and Lois will be greatly missed by all her loved ones, we find comfort and joy in knowing she is at peace in Heaven. At her request, the family will announce a Celebration of Life for Lois when the sunny, warm days of late spring return in 2022. Those wishing to make donations in memory of Lois may do so to the charity of choice or to: Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave. Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 National Pediatric Cancer Foundation, 5550 West Executive Drive, Suite # 200, Tampa, FL 33609 Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
