Doris Elaine Reher Obituary

Doris E. Reher of Lakewood, CO passed away peacefully December 9th surrounded by her family. She had been struggling with her health for the last 6 years. She was born January 26, 1929 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska to Oliver & Sadie Finnefrock. She had an appreciable love of music and dance and an awesome sense of rhythm. Mom was involved in music throughout school, had an ear for music, teaching herself how to play the piano, & won awards in school for her musical talent. She played the organ as a hobby throughout her later years in life and loved to sing, took voice lessons as a youth, and had a beautiful voice. She met the love of her life George Reher at the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival (since renamed) in her hometown when she was 17. George was on leave from the military and visiting family in the area. They fell in love quickly and it flourished through exchanging letters as Dad had to return home to Denver. He proposed to Mom on her 18th birthday while she was sitting on his lap during a visit to her home. They were married on her 19th birthday in Plattsmouth & then moved to Denver just days after the wedding, which proved challenging for her, moving away from her family & such a tiny town to a larger city. Initially she worked at National Jewish Hospital as an office clerk where she told us "they didn't pay much but they gave us a warm kosher lunch every day". In her 90's when she was actually a patient there, she could recall the names of the women she worked with, showing her love & connection to people, intact memory, & sharp brightness of mind in her later years. She then worked the night shift at Hirschfeld Press. Mom became a Homemaker Extraordinaire while raising their family, talented at baking, cooking, sewing, decorating & making our surroundings beautiful, (as well as herself & us!). She stopped working in 1952 to start our family and focus her energy at home. Mom’s favorite job was certainly having & raising her babies! She mentioned several times in the last few weeks of her life that was the highlight of her life. Once our baby sister started school she went back to work full time with Denver Public Schools as an office clerk at Lake Jr. High where she quickly moved up to school secretary. This enabled her to have the same schedule as her children. After a year she transferred to Brown Elementary until her retirement in 1989. She and Dad created a life rich in laughter, fun, & adventure, camping, partying, dancing, bowling, golfing, traveling, playing pinochle with friends, buying a condo in Pagosa Springs. Mom was in a sewing club for over 50 yrs. She also created gorgeous hand work and focused for years on making Hardanger, an ancient lacy embroidery. She was always busy, even as she sat in front of the TV in her later years, where she concentrated on word puzzles and coloring in a way that really impressed folks with the preciseness and breathtaking combinations of color and beauty. In the summer of ‘89 Mom & Dad bought a travel trailer & started traveling and enjoying their retirement. They became snowbirds traveling often to the Phoenix area, finally settling in Sun City in 1993. After Dad's passing in 1997 Mom created a new life for herself as a single woman & became involved with her church, finding friends to play cards with, was involved with a sorority, her Questers group, including hosting numerous gatherings. She even made a group trip by herself to the British Isles. She always loved entertaining up to a couple weeks before her passing, lovingly gathering friends and family around her and showing such graciousness. She decided to spend the holidays in Denver in 2015 & became ill and was never able to return to Arizona, which broke her heart as she dearly loved the life that she created there. She was preceded in death by her husband George, parents Oliver & Sadie, her sisters Audrey, Rita, Carol, & Ina Mae. She is survived by her brother Byron Finnefrock, children Candace Reher, Mark Reher (Susan), De Ann Reher (Manny Guajardo), & Kathy Partridge (Brendon, deceased). Also 7 grandchildren: Meena Reher-Kelkar, Michael & Caleb Reher, Quinn Gray & Sadie Reher, Alexandrea & Emily Partridge, & a host of nieces and nephews. You may make donations on her behalf to Denver Botanic Gardens where there is a tree planted with a plaque in honor of Mom & Dad.
