Barbara Ann Anderson, age 89 of Menominee, passed away Thursday, December 16th. She was born November 4th,1932 in Escanaba Michigan to the late Elmer and Ann Klasell. She was a graduate of Escanaba High School and St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Marquette. At Escanaba High, she played violin in the Orchestra and was a member of the Choir. On December 4th, 1954 Barbara was married to her High School sweetheart Axel Anderson, in Escanaba. She worked in the Nursery at the Women’s Hospital in Detroit for several years, before moving back to the Upper Peninsula. She also worked at the Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers as an R.N., as well as a Surgical Nurse at the Menominee County Lloyd Hospital for many years. She finished her career as an Infection Control Nurse. Barbara was a voracious reader, having a lifelong love of learning. She got much joy in baking for and entertaining family and friends. She also loved to play bridge, knit and crochet. She was an avid traveler, visiting numerous parts of the United States as well as five trips to Stockholm Sweden to visit family. Her favorite place was their Cottage at Little Lake near Gwinn, picking blueberries, fishing with Axel, and spending time with family and friends. Perhaps her favorite activity was attending the sporting events of her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She served a term as Commander of the Marinette – Menominee Power Squadron, actively participating in efforts to find and verify geodetic survey markers, and teaching sailing and safe boating. Her community service also included Luther Home Board, Menominee Woman’s Club, Lutheran Social Services, Retired Teachers Association and Vasa Lodge. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Axel, and children Steven (Misuk) Anderson, Heidi (Mike) Oczus, and Karen (Jeffrey) Hines. She was blessed with grandchildren Michael, Megan, Andrew, David (Arielle), Kristin, Kara (Jordan), Erik (Molly), and Bryan, and great grandchildren Mya, Michael, Jay, Jack and Kausia. She is also survived by brothers David (Elaine) and Thomas (Judy) Klasell. She was preceded in death by her infant sister Sandra. She is further survived by Axel’s brothers and sisters, Sally (George) Majestic, John (Carol Bergquist), Marsha (John) Burroughs, and Marty (Joanne). Also special cousins John (Suzy) Decker, Mary Jo (Paul) Roll, and best friends Karen and Al Raether. Services will be held on Tuesday December 21st at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2901 13th St, Menominee MI. Visitation is at 10am (CST) and funeral at Noon with Reverend Mark Laatsch officiating. Luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be sent to Lutheran World Relief (lwr.org) or the Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp (fortunelake.org). Anderson Kell Funeral Home is assisting the Anderson family with arrangements.
