Doris Jean Sundet Obituary

Doris Jean Sundet passed away unexpectedly at her home in Littleton, Colorado on December 9, 2021. She was born on August 22, 1944 to Alexander O. Hanson and Ellen M. Foss in Bremerton, Washington while her father worked in the ship yards during World War II. The family returned to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1946 where she graduated from Washington High School in 1962. Doris married William LeRoy Sundet on February 26, 1962 and the couple moved to El Paso, Texas while William served in the Army. There she gave birth to two sons, Stephan and Robert. The couple then returned to South Dakota and lived in Chamberlain, Pierre and Vermillion, until they divorced in 1977 and Doris moved to Sioux Falls with her two children. Doris started her career at the Department of Highways in Pierre and worked there from 1970 to 1974. When the family moved to Vermillion she took a job at the University of South Dakota at the physical plant. She moved to Sioux Falls and began working at Northwestern Bell in July of 1977 as a clerk, then transferred to Colorado in 1994 and retired in 2010 from Qwest after several company name changes. Doris had many activities to keep her busy in retirement. She was very involved with the Sons of Norway Trollheim Lodge, and volunteered at its boutique store several times a month, working there up until her final day. She also worked bingo regularly while it was still in operation, and adopted a highway where she helped pick up trash. Doris was a sweet and soft-spoken woman with a subtle sense of humor. She observed all around her with passivity and would offer a smile to anyone. She lived simply and was quite frugal, but also loved to gamble and have a good time. She enjoyed going to plays with friends, concerts with family, and made trips to the casinos once, or more a week. Every year that she could, she went to Jazz Fest in Sioux Falls and Bob Stock in Fort Morgan, Colorado. She loved the live music and especially enjoyed these concerts as they were free. Doris liked to work puzzles while she was home and always tried to find ones with the most pieces. She had a large collection of them ranging from 1000 pieces to 7500 pieces, some of which she framed and hung on the wall. Most important to her were her friends and family. Nearly every get together involved playing cards and/or dominoes. She had a dear friend and roommate, Sue Lessard, who lived with her for 18 years until she passed away in 2012. She also had a very special friend and companion, Sid Haugum, who she would talk to every day, and go with to plays, shopping, dinner, and to the casinos. Doris is survived by her sister-in-law Mavis Fjellanger of Sioux Falls; her sons Stephan and his wife Lorna of Fort Morgan, and Robert of Sioux Falls; grandchildren Trevan Sundet of Anchorage, Alaska, Rachel Sundet and her partner, Maggie Kroeker of Hudson, South Dakota, Jessica Sundet and her husband Tony Williamson of Henderson, Nevada, and Haley Snell and her husband Brady of Fargo, North Dakota; great grandchildren Revan Williamson, Peyton Snell, and Parker Snell. She is preceded in death by her parents Alex and Ellen Hanson and her brother Arden Fjellanger.
