Rev. Max Gortney

Rev. Max Gortney, age 88, of Green Mountain , went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 7th, 2021. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Park and Mattie Laws Gortney. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Loretta Gortney who passed away in 2014; an infant son, John Gortney and sister, Zena McDowell. He was the Pastor of Heritage Baptist Church. Max was a loving father and friend who will be greatly missed. Left to cherish his memories are his sons: Terry Gortney and wife, Tina, of Green Mountain and Stephen Gortney and wife, Jennifer, of Burnsville; step-mother, Helen Gortney; brothers: Larry Gortney and Don Gortney and wife, Sheryl, all of Ohio; sisters: Jean Gortney of Rocky Mount, VA and Belinda Hudak and husband, John, of Collinsville, OK; three grandchildren: Martina, Logan and Chloe; great-grandchildren; Matanna, Haven, Brent, Braxton all of Green Mountain and Baby Colton on the way and sisters-in-law: Faye Garland of Bakersville and Marlene Johnson and husband, Tommy, of Winston Salem. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Revs. Ray Lane and Don Lane will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Tri State Children's Home at 1528 Lance Tank Road, Bristol, TN 37620.
