Mrs. Ruth H. Johnson, 101, of Galesburg passed away in the early morning of Thursday, December 2, 2021.

Ruth was born July 16, 1920, in Bishop Hill, Illinois the daughter of Alfred and Hannah (Carlson) Heimer. She married Russell G. Johnson on June 21, 1942, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death after 55 years of marriage on May 15, 1998.

Ruth is survived by her children, David R. (Christine) Johnson of Galesburg, Carolyn (Larry) Baughman of Euless, Texas, Susan (Dennis) Morris of Cape Canaveral, Florida and Christine M. (David) Howland of East Galesburg, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Melissa Baughman, Michele (the late Shane) Savage, Doug (Becky) Morris, Nick (Mimi) Vuong-Howland, Carrie (Mike) Sesterhenn, Josh (Liz) Howland, Emily (Jason) DelSoldato and Jennifer (Shawn Demick) Howland; ten great grandchildren and her late granddaughter, Anna’s husband, Mike Switzer. She is preceded in death by her husband, her brother, Glenn Heimer, sister Martha Allen and her granddaughter, Anna Morris Switzer.

Ruth graduated from Galva High school in 1938 and later Browns Business College. Before marrying Russell, she worked for the Agriculture Adjustment Administration. But her true calling was that of a loving homemaker, wife, and devoted mother. Ruth was a member of First Lutheran Church, their Piecemakers Sewing Circle and served as the wedding coordinator for the church. She was a lifelong member of Independent Order of Svithoid. In her later years, she and Russell had enjoyed volunteering for the VNA New Horizon’s. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family. She will be remembered for many things, but especially that she was a tremendous cook, known for the “best pancakes”.

Visitation is scheduled for 10:00-11:00 am Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Services will follow at 11:00 am at the chapel with Rev. Dr. Pamela Marolla officiating.
