Sonia Fuentes Obituary

Our beloved Mother, Mimi, Mimo, friend, daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, and teacher, Sonia Fuentes-Alarcon, gained her wings on Sunday, December 5th, 2021 joining her beloved mother, father, brother, aunts, and uncles, in the arms of Jesus. She was born in Santiago, Chile on December 26, 1941 to Elba Alarcon and Miguel Fuentes. Her younger brother Jorge Fuentes was her best friend, confidant and protector all her years growing up until they were separated with his disappearance in the early 70s. They were never reunited, leaving her with many feelings of loss and sadness. Sonia is and always will be a very strong woman, and her sheer determination in every area of her life helped her create a beautiful family, many friendships and a 35 year career in education, while on this earthly journey. Her constant strength and love for family gave her purpose and desire for a better future. She earned her Master’s Degree at SMU in Liberal Arts and Education, class of ‘79, and began her career as one of the first bilingual teachers in Garland, Texas. We have fond memories of her gathering her first class by knocking on doors of Garland neighborhoods. She taught elementary, junior high, high school, and junior college, retiring from Cedar Hill ISD in 2009, after many years of teaching Spanish. She always felt that teaching was her calling, helping students build their minds, and their futures. Her adventurous spirit took her to many countries, as part of the teaching abroad program, traveling all over the world with her students since the 80s. Her favorite trips were those shared with family and friends, which are memories we treasure. She also enjoyed her creative side, and was a talented painter, artist and poetry writer. As she makes her final travels to be in the arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, she is survived by her children Susana Rosello (Frank), Carmen Boyle (Stuart), Roberto Bacigalupe (Wendy), her grandchildren, Mark (Amanda), Brittany (Francisco), Dylan, Michael (Darlene), Kristen (Lucas), Logan and Holden, her great grandchildren, Cameron, Caden, Meredith, and Kiley, and all her beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. We will carry her legacy always. “Pasajes desolados de un perpetuo y triste invierno en la casa me esperan. Tendre finalmente que enfrentar todos estos miedos Que en noches tristes Me dan escalofrios.” ~Sonia Fuentes-Alarcon
