Roland Leon Sumney Obituary

Roland Leon Sumney, age 88, of Fort Wayne, was greeted by his Savior Jesus Christ, and welcomed into his Heavenly Home Friday, December 3rd, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in the rural Grabill, Indiana area to the late Leonard Orlando and Ercel Leona (Klopfenstein) Sumney.


Roland matriculated through the Leo, Indiana school system graduating in the class of 1951. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953, and after serving the allotted time in Korea, was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant in 1955.


He then attended Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, graduating with a BA in Business Administration. He joined Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company, Fort Wayne, Indiana, serving 39 years, and retired as a Vice President, and the Corporate Secretary in 1998. In addition to his work at Brotherhood, Roland was also active in state and national insurance organizations, having served as President of the Indiana Mutual Insurance Companies Association, and on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.


Roland married the love of his life, Carol Louise (Stump) Sumney, in Mishawaka, Indiana, in August 1958, having celebrated 63 wonderful years together raising their 5 enjoyable children. In earlier years the Sumney family were members of the Evangelical Mennonite Church, in Grabill, Indiana, now Crossview Church; and after moving to Fort Wayne, they became lifelong members of Brookside Church. Throughout his life, Roland served in several faith ministries including as a children’s home board member, Child Evangelism volunteer, and leading a senior adult travel ministry with loving wife Carol. He also used his talents serving in many music ministires, such as church choir director, Koliah singing group, and singing for President Eisenhower’s inauguration. His hobbies included dedicating hours to genealogy research and writing Sumney family history, in addition to enjoying water- and snow-skiing with his family into his 70s.


He is survived by his beautiful wife, Carol, and children: Mark Alan (Tracy) Sumney, Williamstown, Kentucky; Lora Kay (Ken) Wilkinson, Yakima, Washington; Todd Michael (Kari) Sumney, Scottsdale, Arizona; Carrie Lynn Sumney, Whiteland, Indiana; Carla Marie Sumney, Fort Wayne, Indiana; as well as 8 grandchildren: Trent, Breanna & Sean Wilkinson; Brandon, Jacob, Jonathan, Caleb & Emily Sumney; and chosen family: Lori Meyers, Amanda Meyers, Emily (Meyers) (Kyle) Martin & son Grant. He is also survived by sisters Sharon (David) VonGunten, Marceil (Thomas Zehr) (Richard) Kryder, and Marguerite (Al) Carver.


Service is 11:00 am, Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Brookside Church, 6102 Evard Rd., with calling one hour prior. Calling also 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Friday, December 10, 2021 at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St. Burial at Leo Memorial Cemetery. Masks are encouraged.
