He was probably the person most responsible for my goofy sense of humor (when ordering at a drive thru he would always ask “how far to Little Rock?”) and he was always the person you wanted to travel with because you knew you’d make lots of stops for food, ice cream, and anything fun. He was quiet and unassuming, but a stubborn perfectionist who would tell you in great detail how you should do something and then redo it the way he wanted it in the first place. He was a music lover who sang bass and tenor, and could do a mean Elvis, Johnny Cash, or Hank Williams. He could even beatbox. He loved working in his garden and watching sports, and not long before he died he asked if I’d take him to a baseball game. Unfortunately he had trouble recovering in time and we never got to go. I miss you already, Papaw. Some other things we remember about him: -when we were little, he would always have a pack of Chiclets gum on him -he would always begin a conversation with me like he was starting a comedy routine: What’s the latest? What’s your name, puddintane? -he loved British comedy and introduced me to a lot of shows like Fawlty Towers, The Two Ronnies, Mr Bean, Benny Hill, and the Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers -At the dinner table, he was famous for saying how he didn’t think something about the food was very good as he reached for another helping -he would also point at the table in the direction of something he wanted and Memaw knew what it was he needed every time -He would play Jimmy Crack Corn on his guitar and sing almost every time we visited when I was young. It was like his theme song -back before it broke, we would spend a lot of time on his porch swing -when I drove him to therapy for his knee replacement he’d direct me so we’d never go the same way twice. I think he was trying to teach me my way around Wood County. It only partly succeeded. -when I was little I asked him if he fought in World War II; he deadpanned at me and said he fought in World War III. I was pretty embarrassed when I brought that fact up to my mother a few weeks later. -the last few years of his life, he discovered and loved watching music on YouTube. Some favorites I remember include the Gaithers, The Bee Gees, the Seekers, and a Dixieland band called “Tuba Skinny” He was a man of many talents and lots of love. The man who I was named after. The man who knew how to make everyone in the room light up a smile. The man with some of the smoothest dance moves I know. The man who was the best husband to my grandmother and father to my mother has gone to be with our Lord in heaven. I will always cherish the memories that we had and I’m SO blessed and grateful to have spent almost 30 years with you. I love you so much, Papaw. You will always be in my heart. He was an incredibly hard worker with an infectious sense of humor. A wonderful role model for all of us. His passing has been difficult to bear. So glad 3 of my babies got to meet and spend time with him. Love you forever. Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. Papaw, you are so loved. I miss you already. Papa could drive me crazy sometimes, but I loved him so much. His beloved grandchildren Zach, Zane, Luke, Cammie and Cassie
