Eleanor Kreutzer Obituary

In her 91 years, Eleanor Kreutzer taught her family and friends that love is an action and its often given as a plate of freshly baked cookies, homemade pumpkin pie, or handcrafted noodles delivered to your doorstep. To those closest to her she was known as Norie, a small but mighty force in this world. She walked fast, worked fast, and prayed fast. She said goodbye peacefully to her earthly life on December 3, 2021, surrounded by family. Born in 1930 to immigrant farmers John and Elizabeth Herman, Eleanor was the youngest of six siblings, Herbert, Richard, Robert, Dominic, and Isabel. Life on the farm formed her into a hardworking, determined woman with a can-do-it attitude that penetrated every aspect of her life. Her earliest memories were rising at dawn to milk the cows and learning to drive the family tractor as soon as her foot could reach the pedal. A graduate of Holcomb High School class of 1948, Norie not only excelled in her perfect penmanship, she also lettered in basketball and developed a lifelong love of shooting hoops. KU basketball was top of her list of lifelong passions, and she cheered them on until the day she died. Rumor has it she even mailed Roy Williams a box of chocolate chip cookies during one of KU’s stints in the Final Four. Soon after high school Eleanor’s older brother, Bob, introduced her to his fiancé’s younger brother, Marvin Kreutzer, who became the love of her life. In 1950 the two exchanged nuptials at their parish church, St. Mary’s in Garden City, and started a family together creating a strong bond of double cousins. Eleanor is survived by her three children: Debra and Robin Huber, Marvin Kreutzer, Jr., and John and Phyllis Kreutzer, seven grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She is rejoicing in a heavenly reunion with her parents, five older siblings, husband, and great-granddaughter, Madison Huber. Strength and dependability encapsulate Eleanor. She raised her family while working as the head bank teller at Garden National Bank. Nightly dinners of fried chicken from the backyard hens, hand cut noodles and beans, and homemade desserts inspire her family to carry on her craft in the kitchen for generations to come. Outside the kitchen she could be found tending to her backyard vegetable garden or honing her handiwork skills of crochet, embroidery, and floral arranging. She had the incredible ability to turn common commodities into beautiful masterpieces. In the last chapters of her life, Eleanor’s spunk, drive, and sincere love of family guided her daily work. She was loud and proud in the bleachers of life, supporting and cheering on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She ran her kitchen like a drill sergeant and could serve an army of friends and family with ease. She showed up with food on happy and sad occasions and was known for her handcrafted wedding and baby gifts - a crocheted or quilted blanket and a set of her famous crocheted potholders. She was a woman of great skill and a steadfast spirit. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials given to St. Mary Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
