John Carter Davison Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Davison, beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, and teacher. He passed away peacefully after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. John was born to Janet and Dexter Davison in Brooklyn, NY on July 24, 1948. The second of four children, he was raised in Glover Park, Washington DC. He attended Maret School in Washington, DC, where both of his parents taught. As a boy, John excelled in music and the arts and enjoyed sports, horseback riding, history, and French. He spent most of his childhood summers in Ocean Grove, NJ and continued to frequent Ocean Grove for the rest of his life. John graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UNC Chapel Hill with a Major in French Literature. While at UNC, he played on the soccer team, participated in Navy ROTC, and studied abroad in Lyon, France. He obtained a Master of Science in Administration of Justice from American University (AU). Following graduation from AU, John began his long and prolific career as a teacher at Maret School, Norwood School and St. Albans School. He taught at St. Albans for 35 years, where he was a History Master and trained as a learning specialist. John had a great passion for teaching pre-Columbian history, Ogham writing, constitutional studies, and Civil War history. John’s gift as a teacher was exemplified by bringing history to life for his students with engaging demonstrations, living history trips, and Civil War Reenactments. John was a soccer aficionado with an USSSB NSCAA Advanced national license, and coached varsity soccer and lower school sports throughout much of his time at St. Albans. He also loved running and chaperoning ski trips and outdoor education trips. John also was an entrepreneur and remarkable provider for his family. His work ethic was unsurpassed. He harnessed his passion for and experience as a lifelong athlete and teacher to build successful businesses that also had a profound social impact. He was Co-Founder and Co-Director of Georgetown Youth Activities and Georgetown International Youth Soccer and directed winter and summer clinics for almost 40 years. He directed travel abroad soccer from 1987-2011, visiting countries in Europe, Costa Rica and Morocco. John also was active in hosting and facilitating events and camps for Project Children, the Northern Ireland Peace Project for 10 years. His camps allowed children from all different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds to come together and foster lifelong friendships. He authored a children's book about soccer, Little Paul the Soccer Ball. In addition to his soccer clinics and trips, John ran Flying Bulldogs family tours through St. Albans to Europe and Morocco. He also conducted Summer About the Town day camps through St. Albans, taking children on day trips from Catoctin Falls to the Chesapeake Beach. He ran birthday parties and special events at St. Albans, which included sports parties, Double Dare tournaments and Romans and Barbarians battles in Pilgrim (Olmsted) Woods. You could always tell when Mr. “D” was on campus at St. Albans by spotting his old, blue stretch van, graffitied with soccer balls by young campers. John touched the hearts and minds of hundreds of children through his teaching and recreational programs. He leaves a legacy in their lives and in the lives they go on to touch. John also leaves behind a loving family. He met his wife, Christine, at Winston’s in Georgetown in 1977. Together, they moved to Cabin John and had four children: Kelly, Kate, Sean, and Ryan. John often included the family in his different adventures; Christine helped him in his different businesses and he often had one or more of his children in tow while coaching or travelling. When not working, John could be found in Ocean Grove, body surfing in red flag surf and spending time with his beloved family. John is survived by his wife, Christine; his four children: Kelly Adair Davison Tuchman (Phil), Katelyn Adair Mercer (Ryan), Sean Patrick Carter Davison, and Ryan Sheridan Adair Davison; and his four grandchildren: Karen and Brendan Tuchman; and Matilda and Lillian Mercer. He is also survived by his mother, Janet Davison; and his three siblings Dexter Ralph Davison Jr., James Eric Davison, and Jennifer D. Hoppel. John was predeceased by his father, Dexter Ralph Davison, Sr. A memorial service will be held on January 15, 2022 at 1:00pm at the Little Sanctuary at St. Albans Church, 3001 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016.
