Webster G. Tottress Obituary

In Newby, OK on April 22, 1937, Rev. MayAndrew and Edna Tottress welcomed a baby son Webster Garrison. Later, the family moved to “The Farm” in Slick, OK where Webster attended Sand Bottom Church in Beggs, OK, the church his father pastored. There he received his early education at L’Ouverture School. After graduation, he moved to Tulsa, where he was employed by the Carnation Milk Company and then by the Mid-Continent Paper Company. After working several years for the paper company, he pursued his ambition of becoming a barber. He received his barber license and accepted a position at Tulsa’s Skyline Barber Shop on 36th Street North and Lansing and worked there until the shop relocated to The McLain Shopping Center. The barber shop later changed owners and Webster and the new owner Anthony (Tony) Tallent became very good friends. Because Webster was dependable and trustworthy, he was asked to manage the shop and he did so until it closed. Webster then accepted a position at Tee’s Barber Shop located in the Historic Greenwood District. He worked there until the shop was forced to close due to Covid. When the shop reopened, Webster’s health began to fail and he retired from barbering after 55 years. While in Tulsa, he united with the St. Andrew Baptist Church then located on Marshall Street under the leadership of Rev. M. V. Ferguson. Webster served under three pastors (Rev. M.V. Ferguson, Rev. G.A. Webb and Rev. Dr. B.M. Bailey, Sr.) St. Andrew relocated to North Garrison under the leadership of Pastor Webb. Webster was a faithful, dedicated member and served as an usher, the lead church van driver, a member of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry and Co-ordinator of the Media Ministry. He also sang with the Brotherhood Chorus, the Mission Chorus and the Mass Choir. Webster maintained the church grounds and the Manual Marquee. He was dutiful to provide donuts and snacks for the voting precinct workers at St. Andrew Church for every election. His most important work was as an ordained deacon under the leadership of the late Dr. Bertrand Maurice Bailey, Sr. Webster thoroughly enjoyed serving in these ministries and he didn’t miss an opportunity to serve wherever there was a need. Webster had a great love for Pastor Bertrand Bailey, Sr., his church family, and the Bailey Family. Not only was Webster a part of the music ministry of his church, he also sang with the Kings of Joy and the Tottress Brothers #1 that he helped to organize. Webster was instrumental in establishing the Oil Capital Singing Union. Webster met and married Gladys Henderson. To this union three children were born. After that marriage dissolved, Webster later met and married Barbara Ruth Bland. To this union one child was born. Webster and Barbara enjoyed travelling and together they visited twenty-eight states, Washington D.C., Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Over the years Webster received several awards from the Tulsa community. He was featured in the Tulsa World for being an outstanding volunteer for Meals on Wheels. In 2016, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Styles Unlimited Hair Show and at the Pop-Up Barber Battle in 2018, he was recognized and honored for fifty years of service in the barber industry.
