JOHN CHARLES CHURCHWARD passed away on December 3, 2021. John was born on December 5, 1940 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was a 1959 graduate of Elmhurst High School. He then received his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Indiana University at Fort Wayne and his Master’s degree from St. Francis University. He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army Reserves in 1969. John taught social studies at Wayne High School from its opening in 1971 until his retirement in 2000. He married his high school sweetheart Linda (Vollmer) Churchward in 1963. John was a fixture in the Fort Wayne golf community for the majority of his life. He was the Fort Wayne Men’s City Champion in 1973. He also was one of the founding members of the Fort Wayne Senior Golf Association and won that championship in 1995 and 1997. He was inducted into the Fort Wayne Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1997. John loved studying history and was an avid Jeopardy and Chicago Blackhawks hockey fan. He was a member of Waynedale Masonic Lodge #725, the Mizpah Shrine and the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite. He is survived by two children: Tony (Kim) Churchward of Fort Wayne and Jodi (Eric) Smith of Fishers. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Tyler and Ethan Churchward of Fort Wayne and Lauren and Megan Smith of Fishers. He was preceded in death by his father, John Page Churchward, his mother, Iva LaRhue (Seeman) Churchward, and brother, Steven Dean Churchward. Visitation is 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Monday, December 6, 2021 at Fairhaven Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 6557 N. Clinton St. A private graveside service at Lindenwood Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.
