John Frederick Brown Obituary

John Frederick Brown, 86, passed away on November 29, 2021 at the home of his daughter Vanessa Brown where he resided. Born February 20, 1935 in Martinsburg, WV to the late Emma Lucinda Jackson and Charles Jewel Brown, Sr. He married Mary Lillian Cole on September 18, 1953. John attended and graduated from Ramer Memorial School in May 1952. During his time at Ramer, he participated in the band, track and field and football. In fact, he was an excellent football player and so fast that his cleats have been put on display in the Ramer Memorial Museum. On August 11, 1952, he commenced training at the US Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, MD, Company 85, 44th Battalion 4th Regiment and completed training October 28, 1952. He was appointed Steward’s Mate 3rd Class on November 16, 1954, Sub-Group Two, Philadelphia Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet. He was later stationed in Norfolk, VA and assigned to the USS Siboney CVE-112 Commencement Bay Escort Carrier where he served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged February 1, 1956. He was a past member of the Prince Hall Masonic Order Mt. Pisgah #3 Lodge of Martinsburg. He worked as a Bus Boy at Shenandoah Hotel in Downtown Martinsburg. In 1957, he gained a position at Newton D. Baker, later to be known as VA Medical Center, as a nursing assistant until he retired in 1988 after 38 years of service. John is survived by 3 daughters: Vivian Brown, Vanessa Brown (Clyde), Sheila Coffy all of Martinsburg, 5 grandchildren: Antwon Brown of Arkansas, Tanisha Brown, Michelle Brown both of Martinsburg, Shaun Stewart (Nikima) of Ewing Township, NJ and Maurice Adams (Katie) of Glasgow, UK; 7 great-grandchildren: Daiveyon Monroe, Tayari Rosario, Roman Brown, Jr. Shaun Stewart, Jr., Layla Stewart, Liana Stewart and Lochlan Adams; 4 step great-grandchildren: Clyde Brown Jr., Charles Brown (Michelle), Dale Brown (Chanta) & Patrick Burks; 16 step-great grandchildren & 2 step great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Charles Logan, special friends, Leonard Harris and Lawrence Green; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Lillian Brown; daughter, Odis Brown; son, Maurice Adams; and brother, Charles J. Brown, Jr. Service will be held on Monday, December 13, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Jackson officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be at a later date in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
