Doreen Louise Richardson Obituary

Doreen Louise (Gustafson) Richardson, 85, formerly of Oakdale CT, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2021 in Mystic, CT. She was the beloved wife of the late Frederic B. Richardson. Born in Pawtucket RI on September 11, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Nellie (Eatough) Gustafson of Warwick RI.

Doreen was a 1954 graduate of Gorton High School in Warwick, RI, where she excelled in business courses. She married Frederic B. Richardson in 1961 in Shawomet, RI. They moved to Oakdale, CT in 1963 and enjoyed a wonderful and full life together until Fred's passing in May 2020.

Doreen was a loving homemaker and possessed exceptional talents in handcrafts. She was a member of the Thames River Quilters and the CT Society of Decorative Painters. She had a keen eye for detail and was a perfectionist in her sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting and painting. She enjoyed making clothes, sweaters, quilts, wall hangings and decorative painted items for the home.

Doreen had a special touch when decorating her home for the holidays. Each room would come alive in the spirit of the season, especially at Christmas time, reflecting the pride in her English and Swedish heritage. Also, an excellent baker, Doreen's fabulous Christmas cookies in particular were a favorite of family and friends.

Over the years, Doreen and Fred enjoyed camping, and toured the US together in their RV. A particularly favorite area was Pennsylvania Dutch country for the Amish food, farms and crafts. Birdwatching was a favorite pastime, and they often traveled to watch birds in migration.

As an avid fan of women's basketball and a season ticket holder for many years, Doreen rarely missed a Connecticut Sun game at the Mohegan Sun Casino.

Doreen adored her family and enjoyed watching and participating in all sports and activities of her children and grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her children and their families - daughter Keri, husband Andrew Ferland, and grandchildren Jenna and Drew, of Holliston MA; son Carl of South Berwick ME; and son Brad and wife Deborah of Bardstown KY. She was preceded in death by her sister Carol Johnston.

Doreen's family wishes to thank Masonicare Mystic and Apple Rehab for their kind and supportive care.

Calling hours will be 10am to noon at S.R. Avery Funeral Home at 3a Bank St, Hopkinton, RI 02832.

Immediately following (at 1pm) will be a burial service at RI Memorial Veterans Cemetery at 301 S County Trail, Exeter, RI 02822.
