Elsie Arvella Avey

Elise Arvella Avey, 96, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at Doey’s House. Born April 20, 1925 in Shepherdstown, WV, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Lottie Mae (Bowers) Sampsell. Her husband, Fred T. Avey, Jr. passed away in 2005. There was nothing more important to Elsie than family. She did work at Kings Department Store for 13 years. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara K. Weller and Linda D. Cavenee (husband, Kim), both of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren, Curtis B. Stevenson (wife, Wendy) of Clear Spring, Stefanie L. Stevenson of Hagerstown, Ronald L. Avey, Jr. (Valerie) of Hagerstown, Sondra Cardulla (husband, Russell) of San Leandro, CA, Lee B. Hebb (wife, Amy) of Brunswick, Shawn Cavenee (Valerie) of Frederick, Kristi Buppert (husband, Keith) of Frederick, and Nicole L. Weller of Hagerstown; 15 great grandchildren, Kasey and Jessica Sease of Baltimore, Justin and Kyle Stevenson of Clear Spring, Alex Avey of Hagerstown, Donovan and Eden Petri of Pittsburg, PA, Oliver, Stella and Charlotte of San Leandro, CA, Kayla Shatzer and Kody Lacey of Hagerstown, Blace Shatzer of Hagerstown, Bryan Weller of Hagerstown, and Brantley Weller of VA; one great-great granddaughter, Adalynn Collier; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special thank you to her caregiver, Agnes Willis. In addition to her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by one son, Ronald L. Avey, Sr; one grandson, Michael B. Weller; two sisters, Genevieve Oliver and Phyllis Cunningham; and two brothers, Albert and Clarence Sampsell. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 17636 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD. Rev. Duane Musgrove will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
