Jose M. Castro, age 87, of Arnold St., Providence, died January 28, 2017 at the RI Veterans Home in Bristol with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Marcia J. (Fonseca) Castro for 60 years. Born in Brava, CVI, he was a son of the late Marcelino A. and Maria (Baptista) Castro. He worked as a Federal Police Officer for the General Services Administration. He proudly honored our country by serving in the Merchant Marines, Coast Guard Reserves and with the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion. Jose was a poet and belonged to the Poet's Society in Washington, DC. He served as a board member on the Providence Health Center (Progress for Providence) and also served on the Brown University Board of Admissions Interview Panel for local residents of Fox Point. He was an interpreter and translator for the Federal/Superior Court. He was fluent in many languages and taught Portuguese and English to adults in the community. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Maria Castro-Iasimone and her spouse Thomas of Cranston, Daniel Castro and spouse Maria of NJ, Gloria Parenteau and her spouse Jason of Cumberland, and Andrea Castro of Providence. He is survived by his grandchildren: Jessica Bullock, Casandra Cabral- Castro, Andrew Iasimone, Carra-Lynn Cabral-Castro, Marcelino Christian Cabral-Castro and Collin Cabral-Castro. He was the father of the late Marcelino Jose Castro. He was predeceased by his siblings: Rosa, Julia, Ambrosio, Artur and Joao. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 10am at the Rebello Funeral Home and Crematory, 901 Broadway, East Providence, RI. Calling hours will be held Saturday from 9-10am, prior to the service. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jose's memory may be made to RI Veterans Home Fund, 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol, RI 02809 or the ALS Association RI Chapter, 2374 Post Road, #103, Warwick, RI 02886.
