"Bob" Obituary

Robert "Bob" Paul Garling, 89, passed away, Tuesday, November 30, 2021 after a hard fought and courageous battle due to complications of Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's Disease. His wife Carol was by his side as they traveled this long and difficult journey together. Bob was born in Hagerstown ,Md., the son of the late, Milton Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth (Martin) Garling. He was of Catholic faith. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed with Sears Roebuck & Co. in Hagerstown as Display and Advertising Manager, retiring in 1988 with more than 35 years of service. Bob was then employed with the City of Hagerstown for 10 plus years. Bob was an avid jogger. He completed five (5) JFK 50 mile marathons. He faithfully jogged 10 miles , 3 days per week on the C & O Canal-rain, snow, the weather was never a factor. Ice spikes could be found on at least two pairs of running shoes. Bob built racks to hold running shoes and shoes were rotated on a regular basis. He was a life member of the Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion and the Korean Last Man's Club. Bob was a Baltimore Ravens fan and enjoyed watching College Football and Basketball. Sunday afternoon was dedicated to watching football. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, listening to country music on his Sony Walkman Radio and spending time gardening, building and designing various sections on their property. A project file was kept on each job and no job was complete until it was perfect. He received numerous compliments on his work. As a neighbor recently remarked "every time we saw him in his yard he had a shovel in his hand". Bob was a private, soft spoken, gentle, loving man. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Elwood Garling and sister, Nancy Lucille Hall. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Carol Diane (Riggs) Garling and nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 6, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Rest Haven Cemetery 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown with Pastor Ron Schlak officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion Honor Guard. A special thank you to physicians, nurses and staff at Coffman Nursing Home for the care, kindness and love given to Bob during his stay at your facility. I have fought the good fight.
