Eva Mae Sigala Obituary

Eva Mae Sigala (“Mae”), 84, of Castroville passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 24, 2021. She was born May 13, 1937 in Tulare. Mae’s family relocated from Tulare to Salinas when she was 6 and from Salinas to Castroville at age 12. She graduated from Sacred Heart School, Castroville School and Salinas High School. Mae’s primary career was as a Teacher’s Aide for Special Education at Castroville Elementary School, where she was known for the love and care she provided to each child. After retirement, it wasn’t unusual for former students to visit her as young adults. Mae was very involved in her Castroville community, having volunteered for the Artichoke Festival for 50+ years and as a volunteer for the Italian Catholic Federation for many years, among others. She was a devout Catholic, a member of the Altar Society of Our Lady of Refuge Church and a member of Sociedad Portuguesa Rainha Santa Isabel (Portuguese Altar Society celebrating virtues of Charity, Sociability and Protection). Mae was a renowned cook and baker. Most importantly, she will be remembered as warm-hearted, kind, generous and thoughtful. Everyone who knew her loved her. Mae was preceded in death by her father and mother, Joseph and Eva Barcellos, and her beloved nephew, Joseph N. Micheli, Jr. (“Jojo”). Her greatest joy was her immediate and extended family. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Victor; her children, Carolyn Moody (Robert) of Prunedale, Jeffery Sigala (Patricia) of Salinas and Michael Sigala of Zephyr Cove, NV; her grandchildren Brandon Sigala of Salinas, Alyssa Sigala of San Jose, Sarah Mendoza of Fresno, Katherine Torres of Monterey and Nina Moody of Santa Margarita; her eleven great grandchildren, Joseph, Gregory, Logan, Alexander, Christopher, Jeremy, Samuel, Daniel, Zachary, Sofia and Oliver; her sister Angie Micheli of Salinas, her niece Jill Micheli of Woodland; and her numerous cousins, extended Tulare family and friends who have become family. Rosary Service will be held at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 9th, 2021, at Our Lady of Refuge Church, 11140 Preston St., Castroville, CA 95012. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 10, 2021, at Our Lady of Refuge Church, 11140 Preston St., Castroville, CA 95012. Please note that Our Lady of Refuge Church requires face masks regardless of vaccination status. Out of concern for our immunocompromised father, Victor, family and friends who wish to attend the post-funeral reception are required to be vaccinated with masks worn unless eating or drinking.
