Donald Leon Neal

Donald Leon Neal, 87, of Gainesville, Texas, passed away in Muenster, Texas on November 30, 2021. Memorial services will be held at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 10:30am. Don was born in Arkansas City, Kansas on April 22, 1934 to Velma Grace (Grund) Neal and Jess Kyce Neal. He attended Arkansas City schools, through High School, and Cowley County Jr. College. Don married Wilma Jean Hammond on April 9, 1954 in Arkansas City. He joined the Army and was sent overseas to Germany shortly after their marriage. It was discovered while there, quite by accident, that Don was an athlete. They asked him if he could play volleyball, and he of course said yes, so he was placed on the Army volleyball team and traveled Europe on their winning team. He also played basketball, and ran track for them as well. After his stint in the Army, Don worked as a miller at Dixie Portland flour mill in Arkansas City, for 40 years. He enjoyed collecting marbles, and loved attending as many events his children and grandchildren participated in. Don enjoyed gardening, and shared his bounty with many. He also built furniture for those he loved, and took pride in building the house he and Wilma lived in until moving to Texas in 2013. Don was also a proud member of the American Legion and VFW. Don is survived by a daughter Kim and husband Jeff of Gainesville, Texas, and daughters, Kinzie (and Paul) Williams, Jami (and Nate) Bruce, Kallie (and Ronnie) Porter, and Jenna Gerstberger; son Todd and wife Lisa of Herriman, Utah, and son Jace. Granddaughter Kylie (and Trey) Beauregard, Grandsons, Tyler (and Aimee) Neal, Ryan Neal, and Rielly Neal. He was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren. Don was predeceased by his parents, his wife, son Kyce, and great-granddaughter Kasidy Williams.
