<p>Duane L. Green of West Chester, PA died on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife, Betty Utke Green with whom he shared 70 years of marriage. He was born at Fargo North Dakota on July 12, 1927 to the late Fred B. Green and Esther D. Green.</p> <p>Duane attended Fargo Schools and left High School to enlist in the Marine Corps during WWII. Following the end of the war, his duties with the Marine Corps included three polar expeditions as a tractor driver and radio operator. Because he spent a goodly amount of time, often alone, on the Antarctic Ice Cap, a piece of land is officially named for him there.</p> <p>Following his military service, he attended North Dakota State University and graduated from Iowa State University. Later he received his Master&#39;s degree in Natural Resources Administration at Michigan State University.</p> <p>A life-long professional Forester, he became Deputy State Forester for the State of North Dakota and then worked for the USDA-Forest Service in Minnesota; Washington, DC; Oregon &amp; Washington; and the Northeastern States. He handled some of the fire control and timber salvage operation following the Mt. St. Helens volcano eruption. Following his retirement in 1989, he spent the next 18 years as a consulting forester managing privately held timber lands.</p> <p>For over fifty-five years, he took quiet satisfaction in using his knowledge and influence to mentor young men &amp; women as they began their careers in the natural sciences. He and Betty co-taught Adult Bible studies in Church settings from 1964 - 2019. His hobbies were woodworking and the making of old wooden tools that he used in demonstrations.</p> <p>In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Katherine Wodtke (Ron Wodtke) MN; Debra Green (Ken Davenport) IN; Valerie Green PA; a sister Joanne Stolle MO and a niece Pamela Overmann of VA. Grandchildren Michael Wodtke (Lisa Rebarchek); Laura Wodtke Aydt (Eric Aydt) and Great-grandchildren: Palmer, Dylan &amp; Corbin.</p> <p>A Memorial Service for family was held on November 24, 2021 at James J.&nbsp;Terry Funeral Home, Downingtown, PA. Interment services were held at Alice Salem Cemetery, Cass County ND, December 2. 2021.</p> <p>Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to Grove UMC, 490 West Boot Road, West Chester, PA 19380 or a charity of your choice.</p>
