Patricia Anne James Obituary

Patricia Anne James

Silently and peacefully on the afternoon of Thursday, November 25, 2021, Pat received her wings.

Patricia Anne Barrow James, affectionately known as "Pat" or “Tricia”, was born in Shelby, North Carolina on March 5, 1949, to the late Walter L. Barrow and Mary L. Hall Barrow. The following siblings preceded her in death: Lawrence L. Barrow, Franklin D. Barrow, Sr. and Gussie Barrow Briscoe. Her husband of 38 years, Warren Richard James, Sr., preceded her in death in May 2007.

Pat received her education in the Cleveland County Public School System, in Shelby, North Carolina culminating with a diploma from the Cleveland School, June 1967. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church, in Shelby, North Carolina. After graduating high school, Pat moved north to Washington, D.C., where she studied business administration and management at Strayer University, graduating in 1976.

Pat met the love of her life, “Richard”, in 1968 and they would marry on August 23, 1969 at the North Brentwood A.M.E. Zion Church, where Pat was a member. With her marriage to Richard, she was blessed to gain a step-daughter, Jeannie. Richard and Pat’s family would soon grow further with a daughter, Dawn, and a son, “Rick”.

Soon after their marriage, she moved her membership to be with her husband, and by letter, joined The First Baptist Church, Inc., North Brentwood in August 1970. Pat remained a faithful member for 51 years. Pat’s service at the church included preparing meals for Saturday Church School, serving with the Host and Hostess Ministry, in which she served for over 40 years, and later she would become the Ministry Leader for the Hospitality Ministry.

For 41 years, Pat worked for the United States Federal Government at the Export-Import Bank of the United States until her retirement on November 1, 2013 from the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. During her long career, Pat garnered many accolades, including outstanding achievement awards and awards for excellence. She served with a “cutting edge” as the CFO’s office transitioned their file processes as technology began to advance. She also served as the Administrative Historian for the CFO’s Office.

In her spare time, Pat enjoyed cooking and sharing her recipes. She especially enjoyed her favorite holiday, Thanksgiving. She enjoyed shopping and buying beautiful furnishings and pieces, with which to decorate her home. She had an amazing green-thumb and cared for her “mini” jungle of plants. Pat enjoyed traveling, especially for family vacations where she was just told to pack her bags and have her passport ready. Pat also enjoyed watching the Hallmark and Lifetime networks, and her favorite TV shows were Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The View and ABC World News Tonight with David Muir. Lastly, she enjoyed oldies but goodies and gospel music.

Sometime in the early 1990’s, Pat was encouraged by family and friends to start a catering business. After careful thought, she and Richard began what would be a flourishing part-time family owned business for over 25 years. She also played an active role as a committee member for the Barrow-Scott Family Reunion, Washington, D.C. Chapter, and she was also a Co-Founder and active committee member for the Marshall Family Reunion. She enjoyed being around her family and friends.

Pat leaves to cherish her memory: a step-daughter, Sarah Jean Warren (Michael), a daughter, Dawn Rénee James; a son, Warren Richard James, Jr. “Rick”; four grandchildren, Dane, Mychael, Nicholas and her youngest granddaughter, Christian, who is the “apple of Granny’s eye”; two great-granddaughters, Charleigh and Dylan; a sister-in-law, Helen C. Barrow; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Edwin R. James (Audrey) and Gregory W. James (Shirlene); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; and her two dearest friends Mrs. Patricia Hayes and Mrs. Gloria Brooks-Reid.
