OBITUARY – NORMA JEAN ROPER
Norma Roper, age 90, of Hartney, Manitoba, passed away on November 26. 2021 at Hartney Personal Care Home. Norma Jean Phillips was born at her parents’ home on SE 33-5-24 (near Lauder). She attended school at Grand Bend and Melita before teaching for one year, then working as a teller at the bank in Hartney. She married Watson Roper on April 7, 1956. They lived near Dand for one year before moving to the farm on SE 5-6-23, near Hartney. They moved into town in 1994.
Norma is remembered as a calm and patient person. When one of her grandchildren asked how she raised five kids, she responded, “I just did it.” She was a supportive parent who tried to provide as many opportunities as possible for her children. She always looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Norma is also remembered as an excellent cook. People were often amazed at how she could whip up a meal for a crowd, on short notice, during seeding and harvest time. A traditional Christmas morning breakfast always included blueberry pancakes.
In her spare-time, Norma enjoyed reading, gardening, curling, fishing, crocheting, golfing, camping, and traveling. Many trips involved visiting relative out west or going to Elks Conventions in various parts of Canada. Later in life, she liked going the rink to cheer on the local curling and hockey teams. She participated in every activity she could at the Personal Care Home. She was particularly lucky at Bingo, and always chose tissues as her prize.
Norma loved to learn new things. She was involved in the Toastmistress Club, the Wine Tasters Club, Hartney Archery Club, and NESK Ceramics. She and Anne Scharff took computer and accounting courses at Hartney Collegiate while her own children were attending. At the Personal Care Home, she participated in art classes. Norma was very interested in genealogy, and often ran to get one of the history books out if there was a question about someone’s family that she could not answer off the top of her head. She used the skills she learned in Creative Memories classes to create wonderful photo books for all her children.
Norma was very involved in the community. She was a member of the Royal Purple, Museum Committee, United Church Women, and other church committees. She believed that, if you were going to be a part of an organization, you should take your turn as president, secretary, or treasurer. She was an ambulance attendant for several years, until back problems made it impossible to continue.
Norma is preceded in death by her parents, George and Lela Phillips (Graham); brothers, Gordon, Harold, and John Phillips; sisters, Irene Phillips and Dorothy Hicks; son-in-law Larry Nelson; sisters-in-law Peggy Phillips and Donna Phillips; and brother-in-law, Elmer Hicks. She is survived by her husband Watson Roper; son Allan (Christina) Roper of Hartney; daughters, Dianne (Paul) Jackson of Cranbrook BC, Brenda (Perry) Cassils of Deloraine, Georgia (Ken) Dangstorp of Alameda SK, and Colleen Nelson of Turtleford SK; brother, Clare Phillips of Hartney; grandchildren, Lisa (Adam) Howes of Calgary, Juliana Mosby of Calgary, Dana Mosby of Nanaimo; Jordan (Stephanie) Roper of Reston, Carly (Steve) Zacharias of Winnipeg, Jonathan Cassils of Deloraine, Drew Nelson of Turtleford SK, Landon Nelson of Saskatoon SK; great-grandchildren Kadence Howes, Isla , Knox and Sutton Roper, and Edie Zacharias. Norma is also survived by in-laws Edie Phillips of Ottawa, Patricia Phillips of Hartney, Hazel (Bob) Hicks of Souris, and Grace (Vern) Guttman of       ; as well as many nephews and nieces.
