Gloria Rose Matthews Obituary

Gloria Rose Matthews, 79, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, November 5, 2021, with her loving husband, Billy, at her side. She was born on March 17, 1942, to the late George Phillip and Rose Perry Hallstrom in Pascagoula, MS. The memorial service will be held at Church of God in Wade, MS, on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Larry Dishman officiating. The family will accept friends one hour prior to the service. Billy and Gloria crossed paths when she a mere girl; he barely a man. She married when most her age were focused on nothing more than boys and homework. And yet, despite the obvious shortcomings of youth and inexperience, their love endured through good days and bad to bear the fruits of three loving sons, David (Lizbeth), Garry (Debra), and Jeff (Laura), six grandchildren, Mike, Darby, Phillip, Samantha, Benjamin, and Jack, and 6 great grandchildren, Noah, Austin, Riley, Kady, Matthew, and Martha. Our mother was a woman of inimitable strength and physical beauty. She possessed an undying devotion to God and family. This manifested in her incredible ability to virtually forgive most anyone for any act {regardless of severity} against her or her family; whilst more often than not, gaining the friendship or confidence of the offender. She had an extrasensory connection, if you will, with family and strangers alike. She could feel your sadness and/or pain without having spoken a word. Her intent was to reach out to lend a hand, a prayer or just moral support. As Mom and Dad were married 63 years, one might ask, “What is the secret to their marriage?” We think most would say God and laughter. Simply put, “Laughter is the closest thing to the Grace of God. So blessed have been the lives of Billy and Gloria.” As a matter of fact, our Dad might find himself explaining it this way, “It’s true that laughter really is cheap medicine. It’s a prescription anyone can afford. And best of all, we can fill it right now.” And so went the lives of Mom and Dad as one decade flowed into another. Anyone who knows Billy and Gloria know their devotion to one another is unmatched. That being said, we came across a quote which best exemplifies that devotion. “My wife is really sentimental. One Valentine’s Day I gave her a ring and to this day she has never forgotten those three little words that were engraved inside . . . Made in Taiwan”. One could say the question that most comes to mind now is, “How do we go on without her?” From the age of sixteen, Mom was the thread that held us together. Through thick and thin, tragedy and triumph; the family never wavered because we knew she was nearby. Tears well in our eyes as the reality of loss comes seeping into the routine of our day. Although no longer physically present, we take comfort in knowing her guiding gracious spirit will never leave us. As we look back over the years, we realize our Mom was always doing her best; making tough choices for us when she wasn’t sure they were the right ones. But one thing we were always certain of is that each decision she did make was the result of a deep unabiding love of a mother for her children. She had that rare ability to hold onto the good and breathe through the bad. We will remember that she was there no matter what. When so tired she could barely move, she always found strength for her family.
