Monsignor Nicholas Vincent Grieco

Monsignor Nicholas V. Grieco, a longtime priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport and Stamford resident, entered into eternity on Saturday November 27, 2021. Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 7, 1933, he is survived by his sister, Isabelle Grieco also of Brooklyn and several cousins. He is predeceased by his parents Nicola and Maria Domenica (Rinaldi) Grieco, his brother Joseph and his sister Stella. Monsignor Grieco attended LaSalle Academy in Manhattan and Our Lady of Mercy Preparatory Seminary in Lenox, MA. He held a BA in Philosophy from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC; a STD degree in Theology from the Angelicum Pontifical University in Rome; and a Masters degree in Corporate and Political Communications from Fairfield University as well as other post-graduate pastoral studies. Since his ordination on June 6, 1959 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Monsignor Grieco led a highly productive and varied life in service to his diocese. He had been a missionary, parish curate, elementary school principal, director of religious education, spiritual director, director of communications, media expert, pastor, and founder/editor of Fairfield County Catholic - Bridgeport's diocesan newspaper. He also served as Associate pastor at Saint Edward the Confessor Parish (New Fairfield), Sacred Heart Parish (Stamford), and Saint Maurice Parish (Stamford). From 1992 - 2009, Monsignor Grieco was Pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish (Weston) where, among other innovations, he founded a Montessori preschool and shepherded the expansion and construction of the new parish hall. Serving five consecutive bishops, Monsignor Grieco had been an active member of the Diocesan Liturgical and Ecumenical Commissions, Secretary to the Bishop for Evangelization, territorial Vicar for Vicariate II and member of the Diocesan Board of Consultors. Since his retirement, Monsignor lived at the Queen of the Clergy Residence in Stamford, still celebrating daily liturgies and directing retreats at several local parishes. The family of Monsignor Grieco wishes to thank all the family and friends who played a vital part in his life and who walked with him on his journey of faith. They also thank Dr. Michael Fusco, Dr. Thomas Nero and especially Ms. Angela Martin and his other care-givers for their loving attention and support. Calling hours will be from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, December 2 at the Parish of St. Cecilia-St. Gabriel, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 10:00 am also at the Parish of St. Cecilia-St. Gabriel. Internment will take place in New York.
