Norma Doucette of North Berwick died November 21, 2021 in her home just four days after her 90th birthday. At three years old, she was hit by a car, forcefully enough to knock her shoes off, but was uninjured. When she was well into her sixties, she traipsed through the ruins of Ankor Wat and the Teotihuacán ruins in Mexico and walked with uniformed school children and King Nana Takyi of Aburi through Ghana’s Aburi Botanical Gardens. Whether she was eating Thai food on the streets of Bangkok or using the “Happy House” in Cambodia, Norma Doucette was always game. 

When she was 19, she married Albert “Albie” Doucette, a GI Bill Art student at Vesper George in Boston and they moved from Massachusetts to Maine along with her parents, George and Elizabeth Titcomb. Norma and Albie had three children Elizabeth, Alan & David. She was a wonderful mother, an excellent cook, she made the best bread and she had many artistic interests from pottery to pastels.  Albie died in 1988.  

Her older brother, who taught her to drive when she was 12, joined the army in WWII and died in the Bataan and Corregidor death march. Her older sister and best friend, died at 44 and her oldest brother died 3 months later. The oldest sister predeceased her in her 80s. 

Loving her family became her main occupation and it was easy to love her back. Everyone who met her felt the power of her love. At a Dirty Projectors concert at the Paradise in Boston on her 79th birthday, her grandson, who played bass in the band, stepped out on the front of the stage and said “it is a very special person’s birthday today.” He looked at Grandma and began singing Happy Birthday to you… and all 900 people sang Happy Birthday as the spot light was trained on her. She wasn’t embarrassed but waved to everyone like a queen. 

She was so proud of the family she left behind: Elizabeth Doucette and her husband Ben Baldwin, Alan Doucette and his wife, Kristina, David Doucette, six grandchildren, Nathaniel Baldwin, Niles Baldwin, Dylan, Nico, Natalie and Micah Doucette as well as her deceased siblings’ children, Susan Locke, Lewis Carder, Danny Carder and Ernest, Roberts, Carolyn Lynch and Connie Hyslop, Bill and Peter Titcomb, her niece Ruth Lawrence and longtime friend Kathy Boston.
